Volvo ES90 Electric Sedan Unveils on March 5 Alongside Updated S90 | Carscoops

The ES90 sedan will be built on the same platform as the EX90 SUV and will have improved core computing capabilities.

Volvo has revealed that its fully electric ES90 flagship sedan is set to launch on March 5.

The ES90 aims to be the most powerful Volvo to date regarding core computing strength.

Recent photos of a revamped Volvo S90 have surfaced online, indicating a forthcoming introduction.

Volvo is preparing for the debut of the all-new ES90, scheduled for March 5. This fully electric sedan operates as a software-defined vehicle powered by the Swedish carmaker’s Superset tech stack, making it the most potent Volvo in terms of core computing capabilities. Additionally, updates are being made to the S90 sedan to ensure an ICE option is still available alongside the new EV.

Following last year's initial teaser, Volvo released another image of the ES90, which reveals a unique split taillight design at the rear. While maintaining the classic three-box sedan shape, the EV adds extra LEDs beside the rear window, enhancing the primary taillights positioned traditionally.

Previous teasers have highlighted the ES90’s elegant roofline, recognizable greenhouse, flush door handles, and a roof-mounted LiDar. The front design is expected to mirror the EX90 with Volvo’s iconic "Thor’s hammer" LED headlights.

      Advanced Technology Under the Hood

The ES90 utilizes the SPA2 architecture shared with the EX90, even as Volvo prepares to unveil the new SPA3 platform with the EX60 in 2026. This new sedan will be the first to feature a dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin setup, providing the highest core computing capability in the brand's lineup. This setup will also be made available in the EX90, offering existing customers a complimentary upgrade.

The system supports AI-driven active safety features and sensors, contributing to Volvo’s "Safe Space Technology." In terms of sensor equipment, the ES90 will have one LiDar, five radars, eight cameras, twelve ultrasonic sensors, and an "advanced driver understanding system" inside the vehicle.

Similar to the mechanically related SUV, the electric sedan will include the Volvo Cars Superset tech stack—comprising hardware and software modules and systems—that will eventually be incorporated into all of the automaker’s EV lineup. Software updates will enable the ES90 to “continuously evolve and improve over time” regarding safety, connectivity, and performance.

The Volvo S90 Is Undergoing a Facelift

In tandem with the ES90, Volvo is working on a significantly updated version of the ICE-powered sedan, one of five new models slated for 2025. Leaked images show a complete overhaul of the front and rear, giving this classic model a contemporary look. Initially launched in 2016 with a slight update in 2020, the facelift of the S90 extends the model's lifecycle as an alternative to Volvo’s expanding electric offerings.

It is still uncertain if the V90 estate will also be updated with the new design. Last month, Volvo announced it would implement "meaningful upgrades" for two existing models in 2025, one of which is the recently refreshed XC60.

By prolonging the lifecycle of its older ICE-powered vehicles, Volvo is providing alternatives alongside its expanding electric range, particularly after stepping back from its goal of transitioning to an EV-only brand by 2030. This strategy mirrors that used for the newly facelifted XC90 flagship SUV, which will continue to be offered alongside the fully electric EX90.
