Cybertruck Excels in Safety Evaluations with a 5-Star Rating (Updated) | Carscoops

The Cybertruck has achieved a five-star safety rating from the NHTSA, performing exceptionally well in various tests.

This marks not the first electric truck to earn this accolade, as the F-150 Lightning also received a five-star rating.

The NHTSA evaluations were performed using Tesla's premium $99,990 Cyberbeast model.

Update 2/20: Following the announcement of the Cybertruck's five-star safety rating by the NHTSA, Tesla released a behind-the-scenes video featuring its Crash Lab. The video showcases Tesla's efforts to improve the safety features of the electric truck, highlighting aspects such as large single-piece castings, rollover prevention, and maximizing occupant protection.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the Tesla Cybertruck an overall safety rating of five stars. Although the electric truck did not excel in all assessments, it received a four-star rating for rollover resistance and a passenger frontal barrier test, which mimicked a head-on crash between two similar vehicles at 35 mph (56 km/h).

The tests, conducted last December by California’s Applus IDIADA KARCO Engineering, used a 2024 Cybertruck Cyberbeast. While the detailed findings are extensive, the frontal barrier impact test indicated “100 percent windshield retention and no intrusion into the protected zone of the windshield.” Moreover, both the driver and passenger side doors remained closed during the test and were operable post-impact.

Although the knee airbags for the driver and passenger did not deploy, Tesla clarified that this was intentional for this specific test configuration. However, the front airbags did activate to protect the dummies representing the driver and passenger.

The rigid pole side impact test yielded few noteworthy findings, but the side airbags deployed as anticipated. The moving deformable barrier side impact test also showed unremarkable results.

Tesla is likely pleased with these results; however, it is important to mention that the Cybertruck isn't the sole five-star electric pickup, as the Ford F-150 Lightning also holds the top safety rating. Unfortunately, the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, GMC Hummer EV, and Rivian R1T have yet to receive ratings.

While the Cybertruck proves to be safe, it comes with a hefty price tag, starting at $79,990 and reaching $99,990 for the top-tier Cyberbeast model.
