Mazda has enhanced the special MX-5 by reinforcing its chassis and upgrading both the suspension and brakes.

The sports car’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine has been modified to yield 197 hp.

Mazda has also incorporated new Bilstein shocks and Rays TE37 wheels.

The new sub-division will compete with performance branches from Toyota, Hyundai, and Honda.

The Mazda MX-5 is still one of the rare affordable and thrilling driver-centered sports cars available today. Later this year, it will become even more appealing with the launch of the Mazda Spirit Racing variant that was previewed at last month's Tokyo Auto Salon.

Notable competitors for Mazda, such as Toyota and Hyundai, have enhanced their offerings recently with the introduction of Gazoo Racing and N brands. Mazda previously had its own performance division called Mazdaspeed, but it was discontinued over ten years ago. Mazda Spirit Racing serves as the successor to Mazdaspeed, signaling the brand's return to the performance vehicle sector. The modified MX-5 is its inaugural model.

According to BestCarWeb, the production model is expected to arrive in November and should closely resemble the car unveiled last month. It is anticipated to be limited to 200 units and available solely in the Japanese market. This is unfortunate for MX-5 fans outside Japan, but if there’s enough international interest, it could potentially be made available in other regions as well.

      The Upgrades

A variety of visual modifications set the Mazda Spirit Racing MX-5 apart from the standard model. It features a new front splitter and stylish side skirts, enhancing its sporty look. Mazda has also equipped it with new six-spoke black Rays TE37 wheels paired with bright red brake calipers. The vehicle sports black badges and stickers, contributing to its athletic aesthetic. Inside, there are Recaro seats, four-point harnesses, and red accent stitching.

Numerous changes have been implemented beneath the surface as well. Most notably, the 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine now includes improved camshafts, pistons, exhaust manifold, and a newly designed cylinder head, increasing its output to 197 hp and delivering more torque than the standard version. Bilstein dampers, enhancements to the underbody stiffness, and specialized tires are expected to improve the handling of this compact roadster, which will undoubtedly please potential buyers.
