Next-Generation Ford F-150 Allegedly Postponed Until 2028 | Carscoops
The F-150 has recently lost its title as the top-selling vehicle and will now remain on the market for a longer period.
Reportedly, Ford has postponed the launch of the next-generation F-150.
Initially anticipated for 2027, the model may not debut until mid-2028.
In recent months, Ford has canceled or delayed multiple models.
The facelifted F-150 was launched in the fall of 2023, but the update was ineffective as sales decreased by 5% last year. This allowed the older Toyota RAV4 to take the title of best-selling vehicle in the U.S.
This was a surprising turn of events, and it seems that further assistance is not forthcoming as Ford pushes back the next-generation F-150. According to executives from three suppliers, Crain’s Detroit Business reports that the redesigned truck has been delayed by at least a year.
The model, which is believed to be codenamed P736, was expected to be released in 2027 but has now been deferred to at least mid-2028. In light of this delay, it's not unexpected that suppliers have also been informed that Ford is extending production of the current F-150 for another year.
The exact reason for the delay is unclear, and Ford did not confirm or refute the timing when questioned by the publication. Nevertheless, the F-150 is a vital product for Ford, generating substantial profit margins, making such a delay unusual and potentially opening the door for Chevrolet, GMC, Ram, and Toyota to gain market share as the F-150 ages.
While there are still many unanswered questions, Ford has rescheduled or canceled several upcoming models. Specifically, the company had planned to introduce three-row electric crossovers in 2025, but those plans were postponed to 2027 before being scrapped entirely.
Additionally, the launch of the F-150 Lightning successor, known as Project T3, has been delayed to the latter half of 2027. When this change was announced, Ford indicated it would allow them to "utilize lower-cost battery technology and benefit from other cost breakthroughs as the market evolves."
In 2027, Ford also intends to introduce an electric medium-sized truck based on a new platform. Tentatively named the Ranger EV, this model aims to meet the needs of customers seeking greater value—more range, utility, and usability.
In other developments, Ford CEO Jim Farley recently stated that the company is moving toward range-extended electric vehicles. He noted that these vehicles can employ smaller, less expensive batteries than conventional EVs but "still drive most miles in all-electric mode." Farley also mentioned that these savings could amount to "tens and tens and tens of thousands of dollars."
