BYD's commitment to equip 21 models in China with the God's Eye ADAS package has led to dissatisfaction among current owners who believe they have overpaid for their vehicles.

In just a week, BYD has faced over 4,700 complaints on a major automotive quality platform in China.

These grievances arose after the brand announced that the God’s Eye system would be standard on 21 different models. Many who purchased cars before this announcement are now seeking compensation.

Earlier this month, the Chinese automaker BYD revealed that its "God’s Eye" driver-assist package would be included as standard across 21 models at all price levels. While this is positive news for prospective buyers, it has not been well-received by current owners, who have taken to online forums to express their concerns about having overpaid.

A large number of BYD owners have shared their frustrations on 12365auto.com, a Chinese third-party site specializing in automotive quality. The complaints were substantial enough to elevate models from BYD’s Ocean and Dynasty series to the list of the top 10 most complained-about vehicles on the platform.

According to a report by Reuters, over 4,700 complaints were lodged against BYD from February 11 to 17 following the announcement of the upgraded ADAS. In contrast, only 150 complaints were reported the week prior.

One dissatisfied BYD Qin L DM-i sedan owner remarked that the company reduced prices and added new features merely four months after their purchase, leading them to request compensation.

Another frustrated customer, who had just acquired a Seal 06 DM-i, expressed disappointment upon learning that a newer version with significant upgrades was released at the same price, despite having “repeatedly” inquired about any upcoming updates from the salesperson.

According to the quality platform, BYD has acknowledged these complaints and stated that they have been forwarded to the relevant departments.

Not all “God’s Eye” systems are the same.

The 21 BYD models set to receive the standard “God’s Eye” ADAS package are priced between ¥69,800 and ¥239,800 (approximately $9,600 to $33,100 at current exchange rates), with the BYD Seagull electric hatchback being the most affordable model.

It is important to note that the God’s Eye system comes in three variations – A, B, and C – each offering different levels of sophistication. The basic version C will be included in less expensive BYD models, while the mid-range version B will feature in offerings from the Denza and Fang Cheng Bao brands. The premium version A is reserved for the Yangwang line.

BYD is not the only manufacturer facing backlash amid a price war in China, which is notably more intense than in other regions due to fierce competition in the world's largest automotive market. Earlier in 2023, numerous Tesla owners gathered at local dealerships seeking rebates after the company lowered prices on its models.
