Mazda has removed its supermini from the UK market, likely in response to emissions regulations.

The Mazda2 was introduced in 2014 and underwent its latest redesign in 2023.

The Toyota-based Mazda2 Hybrid will continue to be sold as an indirect alternative.

After over a decade of availability, the Mazda2 supermini has been officially discontinued from the brand's lineup in the UK. While there is no direct successor, customers still have the option of the Mazda2 Hybrid, which is a rebadged (and notably more expensive) version of the Toyota Yaris.

The current generation of the Mazda2 first debuted in 2014, receiving two facelifts in 2019 and 2023. Although it has been removed from the UK market, it remains for sale in Japan, where it has been updated with a new infotainment system for 2024.

A spokesperson for Mazda UK has confirmed to Autocar that the model has been discontinued, stating: "As we transition towards increased electrification of our vehicles, the Mazda2 Hybrid meets consumer demand in the B-segment and is a step in our journey to ensure all our vehicles incorporate some form of electrification by 2030."

According to the same report, Mazda has ceased taking new orders for the Mazda2, leaving only a “few hundred” units available in dealer inventory. The outgoing model was offered with either a standard gasoline or a mild-hybrid 1.5-liter engine, starting at £18,625 ($23,500).

Meanwhile, the Mazda2 Hybrid, launched in 2022, received a mild facelift for 2024 to better differentiate itself from its Toyota Yaris counterpart. This hybrid-only model starts at £24,135 ($30,400) in the UK.

It’s important to note that the rebadged Toyota was never intended to serve as a direct successor to the Mazda2, but rather as an alternative for European and UK consumers focused on electrification. However, after 11 years since the Mazda2's launch, there is still no indication of a next-generation model, leaving the future of the nameplate uncertain.

      Why Discontinue the Mazda2 Now?

Every automaker operating in the UK must pay attention to its annual “carbon credit” allowance. By eliminating older internal combustion engine (ICE) models from its offerings, Mazda seeks to reduce its overall CO2 emissions and avoid potential penalties.

The publication notes that out of the 4,400 Mazda2 units sold in the UK last year, 1,700 were standard gasoline models averaging a CO2 output of 109 g/km, while the remaining 2,700 were mild hybrids emitting 107 g/km. In comparison, the Toyota-derived Mazda2 Hybrid is significantly cleaner, with emissions rated at only 87 g/km.

The fully electric Mazda 6e sedan is anticipated to debut in the UK market in early 2026, making the MX-30 the only battery electric vehicle (BEV) currently offered by the Japanese brand. In 2024, the MX-30 represented just 5% of Mazda's UK sales, falling short of the 22% goal established by the country's zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate. According to this mandate, ZEV sales should account for 80% of the UK market by 2030, reaching 100% by 2035.
