BMW’s Initial Long-Wheelbase X3 Offers China the Space It Desires | Carscoops
The X3 L sold in China features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine available in two power outputs, generating 190 and 258 hp, respectively.
The Chinese version of the X3 has a wheelbase that is 4.37 inches longer than the standard models sold globally.
This extension increases the rear knee room by 3.7 inches while preserving the vehicle's weight distribution.
The redesigned BMW X3 has recently been introduced in China, but the local model differs slightly from those available in other markets. This variation stems from the preference among many Chinese consumers for increased rear legroom, prompting the introduction of the extended wheelbase version before sales commence later this month. No standard wheelbase variant will be available locally; it's the X3 L or none at all.
This marks the first instance of BMW launching a long-wheelbase (LWB) version of the X3, making it a significant development for the Chinese market.
The new BMW X3 models being released in China are locally manufactured and feature a wheelbase that is 4.37 inches (111 mm) longer than their standard counterparts. This extra length results in an additional 3.7 inches (96 mm) of rear knee space, while still maintaining the SUV's characteristic 50:50 weight distribution.
The X3 L is noticeably larger than its predecessor, measuring 4.9 inches (126 mm) longer and 0.9 inches (25 mm) wider. However, the striking design of the updated model effectively disguises its larger dimensions.
At the entry level of the Chinese lineup is the X3 xDrive 25L Luxury. It is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 190 hp and 229 lb-ft (310 Nm) of torque. Although these numbers may not be thrilling, they allow the X3 to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 8.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 133 mph (214 km/h), which is sufficient for this type of vehicle.
At the high end of the lineup is the X3 xDrive 30L. This model features a more powerful version of the same 2.0-liter engine, generating 258 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm). It can go from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.5 seconds and achieve a top speed of 148 mph (239 km/h).
All variants of the Chinese X3 are equipped with numerous features tailored to local consumer preferences. Both models include LED lighting around the front kidney grilles and offer several unique digital services via the infotainment system. Customers can select from five different metallic finishes and one Frozen (matte) option.
While BMW has yet to announce official pricing for the 2025 X3 L in China, it is confirmed that the vehicle will be produced at Plant Lydia, part of BMW's partnership with Brilliance Automotive.
