Toyota and Lexus are recalling more than 40,000 vehicles due to potentially faulty seat belts.

This recall affects several popular models, including the Camry, RX, and NX.

Dealers will examine the second-row center seat belt and replace it if needed.

Seat belts are crucial safety components, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated that they saved 14,955 lives in 2017. Therefore, it is concerning when vehicles are recalled because their seat belts may be compromised.

Toyota and Lexus are recalling 40,922 vehicles due to the possibility that the webbing of their second-row center seat belts could be damaged. As per government reports, improper tooling was utilized during the “hot-knife cutting process,” which may have harmed the seat belt, affecting its performance.

Furthermore, the seat belts were manufactured by Joyson Safety Systems in Mexico, and the issue was identified following a routine inspection, where a “melt mark” was found on the seat belt webbing. This led to an investigation that ultimately confirmed the “webbing strength of second-row center seatbelts did not satisfy certain Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.”

The recall includes the 2025 Camry and the 2025 Lexus NX250, NX350, and NX350h, along with the 2024-2025 Lexus RX350, RX350h, and RX500h models.

Notifications to owners are expected to be sent out in late March or early April, instructing customers to bring their vehicles to the dealership. There, technicians will inspect the seat belt webbing and replace the seat belt assembly if necessary.

While Toyota estimates that less than 0.1% of vehicles have compromised seat belts, the recall includes 32,529 Camry sedans. This figure represents a significant portion of the affected population, with the Lexus RX350 being the second most affected model at 3,242 units.
