The newest competitor to the Tesla Model Y from China features 577 hp, a range of 300 miles, and a high-end interior.
The Seres 5 is a compact electric crossover from China, now launched in Europe.
With 577 hp, the top variant accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.2 seconds.
It offers an impressive 482 km (300-mile) range, positioning itself as a strong competitor to the Tesla Model Y.
Chinese automakers are keenly focused on the European market, seeking to capture market share from well-established brands with attractive, feature-rich EVs, despite the recent import tariffs introduced by the EU. One of the latest players in this expanding competition is Seres, previously known as SF Motors, which unveiled its alternative to the Tesla Model Y in Europe last year. To evaluate its performance against rivals, we took the Seres 5 press vehicle for a test drive.
The Seres 5 first appeared in China in 2019 as the SF5, developed with assistance from Huawei. In 2023, a significantly updated version called the Aito M5 was released, offering both PHEV and BEV options. While the Seres 5 in China has adopted these enhancements, the global version we are testing retains the original design with its unique curved daytime running lights.
Targeting Tesla’s Market
The Seres 5 made its European introduction at the 2023 Munich Auto Show and will progressively be released across Europe in 2024. With a length of 4,710 mm (185 inches), it competes against models such as the VW ID.4, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and, notably, the dominant Tesla Model Y.
Inside, the interior is geared towards a premium experience, featuring a 15.6-inch dashboard display, fine leather seats, and wood accents. The seats are equipped with comfort features that include heating, ventilation, and even a massage option.
Performance and Range
The version being tested is the all-electric, all-wheel-drive model, as the PHEV variant has not yet arrived in Europe. Its dual-motor configuration produces an impressive 577 hp (430 kW / 585 PS) and 940 Nm (693 lb-ft) of torque, allowing it to go from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 4.2 seconds. Power is supplied by an 80 kWh battery pack, providing a WLTP-rated range of up to 482 km (300 miles) on a single charge.
In Greece, where we are conducting our tests, the Seres 5 comes in one fully equipped trim, priced at €57,500 ($60,400) including local EV incentives. In comparison, the pre-facelift Tesla Model Y Performance manufactured in Germany is priced at €57,990, while the upcoming 2026 Model Y Launch Edition will cost €60,990.
In the internal combustion engine segment — partly due to the country's high taxation system — a similarly sized base BMW X3 xDrive20 with 205 hp starts at €68,700 ($72,100). Meanwhile, the only available Honda CR-V, the e:HEV hybrid, is priced starting from €49,900 ($52,400).
We will be evaluating the Seres 5 in both urban and highway settings over the next few days. If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments section, and we’ll address as many as possible in the full review.
Special thanks to Serres Hellas for providing the Seres 5 press vehicle.
