Xiaomi SU7 Ultra Breaks Taycan Turbo GT’s Lap Record at Shanghai Circuit | Carscoops

The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra accomplished a lap of the Shanghai International Circuit in 2:09.94, setting a new record.

This Chinese electric vehicle surpassed the previous record of 2:11.28 held by the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT.

The SU7 Ultra is equipped with one front motor and two rear motors, producing a total of 1,527 hp.

Xiaomi has once again utilized its stopwatch to demonstrate that the SU7 Ultra is the fastest production vehicle at the Shanghai International Circuit (SIC). The electric Ultra completed the track in 2:09.94, establishing a new record for production cars of any powertrain.

Achieving a new record at SIC required breaking the previous one, which was set by the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT. The Taycan, which can be ordered without rear seats as part of the Weissach package, completed the 3.39-mile (5.45 km) course in 2:11.28 in 2024, though the track conditions were slightly damp.

Video evidence of the record run shows the SU7 reaching a remarkable 201 mph (323 km/h) on the back straight, while earlier footage of the Taycan indicated it only achieved 180 mph (291 km/h), even after braking later for a subsequent tight corner.

You can view a high-quality solo clip of the record below, followed by a side-by-side comparison video of the Porsche and SU7 runs further down the post. Although the quality isn't as high, it’s fascinating to see where the Ultra pulls ahead of the Porsche and how it seems to lose some advantage in the corners. We would appreciate seeing detailed telemetry from both runs.

The SU7 Ultra relies on three electric motors—one at the front and two at the rear—delivering 1,527 hp (1,139 kW / 1,548 PS). This is an increase of 435 hp (324 kW / 440 PS) compared to the Taycan Turbo GT, which clarifies the faster performance of the Chinese vehicle on straight paths.

Porsche claims a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) time of 2.1 seconds and a top speed of 190 mph (306 km/h) for the Weissach-equipped GT, while Xiaomi asserts that the Ultra achieves 0 to 62 mph in 1.98 seconds and a top speed of 217 mph (350 km/h).

This isn't the first instance of an SU7 Ultra surpassing the Taycan Turbo GT; last year, one lapped the Nurburgring Nordschleife in 6:46.87, reducing the Porsche's best time by 20 seconds. However, during that event, Xiaomi used a prototype with no interior, whereas Porsche's time was set using a full production model, with only modifications for safety.

To ensure the legitimacy of this record, Xiaomi presented a true production-spec vehicle for the run, complete with tires, and recorded the lap time using the same equipment utilized during F1 events.

The Ultra will be available for purchase in China later this month, priced at 814,900 CNY, approximately $112,000. In contrast, this amount wouldn't even cover a base Taycan 4S in the US, where the Taycan Turbo GT starts at an eye-watering $230,000, over twice the price of the Xiaomi. In China, the Turbo GT is even more expensive, starting at 1,998,000 CNY ($275,500), regardless of whether the Weissach Package is included.
