This Decommissioned Nuclear Fallout Van Has Been Converted Into an Awesome Off-Road Camper.
This 1953 Ford Vanette was originally designed as a nuclear fallout response vehicle. Equipped with lead-lined walls and Geiger counters, it was intended to assess ground zero following an atomic explosion. Thankfully, it was never used for that purpose and later took on several interesting roles after being sold at a military surplus auction. It has now transformed into a distinctive and very impressive off-road camper.
This episode of CARISMA features the van's current owner, Scott Birdsall. Birdsall is a skilled fabricator, professional racer, and the proprietor of Chuckles Garage, a hot rod shop located in Santa Rosa, California. The various cars visible in the background of this video highlight his eclectic taste. He initially built the van for a client but eventually repurchased it and customized it according to his vision for the ultimate off-grid adventure vehicle.
After the Cold War subsided and the Vanette was decommissioned, it served as a mobile recording studio before being repurposed for off-road explorations. It appears to have spent several years idle between different owners, certainly taking on a new appearance at each phase of its life.
Today, it functions as Birdsall's bugout vehicle, powered by a 5.9-liter Cummins diesel engine equipped with an ATS Aurora turbo and MBRP four-inch exhaust. New axles, Ford Super Duty leaf springs, and Bilstein remote reservoir shocks ensure a smooth ride over rugged terrain, while a bamboo-wood interior featuring bunk beds and heated floors provides a cozy atmosphere reminiscent of a "nice Tahoe cabin."
"People say I have a car problem, but it’s not a problem because I’ve got five employees in there," Birdsall explains. "It supports them and their families. I get to go to work and do what everyone else does in their free time. While they work a 40-hour week, looking forward to the weekend to work on their race cars or hot rods, I get to do it all day long."
Birdsall's backstory is motivational, showcasing his impressive achievements in the automotive world, including hillclimb racing, setting land-speed records, and SEMA builds. His shop has accomplished remarkable feats in the car community. Amongst a garage filled with race cars, BMWs, Porsches, and Supras, this quirky nuke van truly stands out. I can't imagine a more challenging vehicle to misplace in a parking lot.
