The Upcoming Genesis G70 May Become Fully Electric | Carscoops
The next-generation G70 may be developed utilizing Hyundai's new eM electric platform.
Genesis is redirecting its strategy towards all-electric vehicles.
Reports indicate that the brand has opted against a hybrid version of the G70, while contemplating an electric variant.
The Genesis G70 remains one of the top sports sedans available, providing excellent overall performance along with a level of luxury and sophistication typically not found in its price range, although its sales numbers haven't reflected this excellence. However, it appears that the G70 may soon be phased out. A recent report from Korea suggests that its successor will be an electric model.
Genesis has been producing the G70 for seven and a half years and it has already been discontinued in certain markets, including Europe, where the brand is currently selling off remaining inventory as it moves towards a fully electric lineup. With Genesis's commitment to offering only electric models in the future, transitioning the G70 to an all-electric vehicle seems like a sensible decision.
According to a Korean YouTuber named MotorsJason, Genesis had initially contemplated a hybrid G70 but has opted to pursue a battery-electric version instead. The upcoming G70 could potentially feature Hyundai Motor Group’s eM architecture, which is intended as a successor to the existing E-GMP.
Hyundai has been developing this new platform for a few years, and it is expected to be used in future models such as the Kia EV8, the Hyundai Ioniq 3, and the Genesis GV90. It is designed to accommodate the latest driver-assistance technologies and the new Cell-to-Pack battery system, which replaces traditional modules.
Details regarding the prospective electric G70 remain limited; however, it may take cues from the GV60 and offer a high-performance Magma variant, potentially positioning itself as a competitive option against the Tesla Model 3 Performance.
Carscoops reached out to Genesis for more information and will update the story once a response is received.
If the electric G70 receives approval for production, early reports suggest it could have a starting price of about 70 million won in South Korea, or just under $50,000.
