Chevy Introduces New Spark EV for South America, Thanks to China | Carscoops
The new Chevrolet Spark EUV, based on GM's Baojun, is anticipated to launch in the Brazilian market later this year.
Chevrolet introduced the Spark EUV at a special event in Brazil.
This electric SUV is fundamentally a rebadged Baojun Yep Plus from China, presumably sharing the same specifications and an affordable price point.
As of February 13, Chevrolet has made official photos and videos of the Spark EUV available prior to its market debut in Brazil, confirming its resemblance to the Baojun Yep Plus.
Chevrolet has ingeniously made the most of its SAIC-GM-Wuling partnership by rebadging one of China's appealing electric vehicles, the Baojun Yep Plus. This completely electric urban SUV made its debut during an event celebrating Chevrolet’s 100th anniversary in Brazil.
The model, which will be marketed in Brazil as the Chevrolet Spark EUV, is essentially just a Baojun Yep Plus with a Chevrolet badge on the grille, with no significant alterations. Despite sharing its name and compact dimensions, the Spark EUV has no relation to the Spark EV, which was Chevrolet’s short-lived electric hatchback offered in certain US states from 2013 to 2017 before being succeeded by the Bolt.
Inside, the Spark EUV features the modern digital cockpit of the Baojun Yep Plus, consisting of dual 10.2-inch displays. It is also expected to include the advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) developed by DJI, the well-known drone manufacturer.
While GM hasn't disclosed the full specifications or timeline for the Spark EUV, the announcement included a broader commitment: the company aims to launch 10 new models in Brazil by 2025, five of which are considered "major" launches. Given its potential appeal and placement, the Spark EUV is likely one of the more important new entries.
Based on the measurements of the Baojun Yep Plus, which is 3,996 mm (157.3 inches) long with a 2,560 mm (100.8 inches) wheelbase, the Spark EUV will be Chevrolet's smallest model. Although the Baojun lineup offers a five-door variant, a three-door version, and even a pickup concept, it is uncertain if Chevrolet plans to introduce any of these alternative body styles in Brazil alongside the rebadged model.
It is probable that the Spark EUV will adopt its powertrain directly from the Chinese counterpart, featuring a rear-mounted electric motor that produces 101 hp (75 kW / 102 PS) and a 41.9 kWh battery. This configuration provides a respectable range of 401 km (249 miles) according to China’s CLTC cycle.
One of the most appealing aspects of this compact off-roader is its affordability. While Chevrolet has not yet announced the Brazilian pricing, the equivalent Baojun Yep Plus begins at approximately ¥93,800 (around $12,900) in China.
Along with the introduction of the Chevrolet Spark EUV, the company revealed a 100th Anniversary Special Series trim for the Onix, Tracker, and S10, a limited lineup tailored specifically for the Brazilian market.
