Widened vehicles are not a new concept. We’ve encountered everything from a Ram pickup to the peculiarities of this double-wide Jeep Wrangler. However, unlike those, this re-bodied Jeep Cherokee is currently available for purchase in the USA—and at a price that is accessible for most people.
The listing, provided by Worldwide Vintage Autos based in Denver, reveals that this is a 1989 automatic model with 249,905 miles recorded. According to the listing, it is fitted with Rancho 5000 shocks, 33-inch BFG all-terrain tires, and a 242 transfer case. The widebody conversion seems to have taken place in 1998 (although this could simply be a mislabeling of the model year) and has added 14 inches to the Cherokee’s width. While that’s modest compared to the previously mentioned Wrangler, it still gives this vehicle an appearance that is quite unusual.
We cannot criticize the exterior craftsmanship, but the added width gives the Cherokee a certain Hummer-like quality, making it look as though it belongs in a video game from 2004. Typically, Jeeps are recognized by their seven-slot grilles; this one has 11. The extra width gives it a more squat profile, losing its charming, boxy proportions.
The interior, in our opinion, is not as refined as the exterior. The multiple storage cubbies could serve as an elegant addition to the dashboard if they fitted better, but the popped panels and mismatched colors emphasize that they clearly don't belong.
However, if you can overlook the awkward proportions—or the fact that an additional 14 inches in width might hinder you on a narrow off-road trail—this retro Jeep could be yours for a reasonable $14,900.
