The Bugatti Tourbillon's Enormous V16 Engine Sounds Completely Insane | Carscoops
There is no other vehicle in the world quite like Bugatti's latest V16-powered hypercar.
The high-revving 8.3-liter engine from Cosworth produces an impressive 986 hp without any hybrid support.
Similar to the Veyron and Chiron, the Tourbillon has a rich rumble, and it sounds even better.
Bugatti claims that the new hypercar can reach 124 mph (200 km/h) in under 5 seconds.
The Bugatti Tourbillon was not a necessity. With the prestigious French manufacturer now owned by Rimac, it could have easily created an all-electric successor to the Chiron using technology from the record-setting Rimac Nevera. However, Mate Rimac aimed for the next Bugatti hypercar to be exceptional, and that’s precisely what the Tourbillon is becoming.
It has been approximately eight months since the Tourbillon was unveiled, and during this period, the hypercar's development has progressed substantially. Perhaps the most notable feature of the new Bugatti is its enormous 8.3-liter V16 engine, and Mate Rimac has recently given us our first opportunity to hear it. Unsurprisingly, it sounds utterly insane.
This brief video showcases the hypercar's sound when revved while stationary and under load. Like the W16 in the Bugatti Veyron and Chiron, the 16 cylinders of the Tourbillon produce a remarkable low-end rumble, but unlike the W16, the new Cosworth engine is much more eager to rev and performs beautifully at higher RPMs.
The specifications promised by the Tourbillon are truly astonishing. To start, the V16 can rev up to 9,000 rpm, which is virtually unheard of for an engine of this size that is road-legal. In total, the engine produces 986 hp, just one horsepower shy of the original W16 in the Veyron, all without the aid of four turbochargers.
Accompanying the 8.3-liter engine is a hybrid system that provides an additional 789 hp. Consequently, the Tourbillon boasts a combined output of 1,775 hp, with Bugatti stating it will accelerate to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 2 seconds, reach 124 mph (200 km/h) in under 5 seconds, achieve 186 mph (300 km/h) in less than 10 seconds, and reach 248 mph (400 km/h) in under 25 seconds.
