Toyota has announced a recall concerning brake issues with the current-generation Tacoma trucks.
Over 106,000 trucks manufactured for the 2024-25 model years require replacement of their rear brake hoses.
The issue affects all-wheel-drive models featuring the smaller 16-inch brake rotors.
Toyota has initiated a recall for its newest Tacoma truck models due to a serious issue with the brakes. There appears to be a design flaw related to the placement of the brake hoses, which could lead to significant problems in the future — especially if you struggle to make a turn safely.
The rear brake hoses of the Tacoma were designed to be located close to the wheel rim on trucks introduced in the 2024 model year. However, the limited clearance allows mud and dirt to accumulate within the wheel over time, potentially making contact with the brake hoses and eventually wearing through the material, resulting in a fluid leak. A lack of fluid will lead to an inability to stop, prompting Toyota to take action, despite the relatively low likelihood of failure.
A total of 106,061 Tacomas produced between January 2024 and January 2025 are currently included in the recall, although more could be added later. At present, Toyota has confirmed that it impacts four-wheel-drive versions of the truck equipped with 16-inch brake rotors and 17-inch wheels.
Trucks with the larger brake setup that features 17-inch rotors are not affected, but Toyota is still looking into whether two-wheel-drive models with the smaller brakes and 17-inch wheels, as well as four-wheel-drive trucks with the smaller brakes and 18-inch wheels, may also require attention.
The solution involves replacing the rear brake hoses with a new set, which necessitates a visit to your local Toyota dealership. This marks the second significant reliability oversight for the new Tacoma, following issues discovered with the available automatic transmission in some models the previous year.
Toyota is experienced with recalls aimed at ensuring its vehicles can effectively slow down when necessary. A decade ago, the company was compelled to recall over 7 million vehicles due to problems related to floor mats that could cause the accelerator pedal to become stuck, or issues with the pedal itself.
