Chevy Blazer to Become Electric-Only as GM Phases Out Gasoline Version: Report
The gasoline-powered Chevrolet Blazer SUV seems to be the newest casualty of the unpredictable automotive market. According to unnamed internal sources, GM Authority reports that the gas variant of Chevy's midsize crossover will be phased out alongside the Cadillac XT5 and XT6 as production for the 2025 model year concludes. The Blazer EV will remain the sole model in production.
A spokesperson for Chevy refrained from commenting on any changes to the lineup, describing the report as “speculation” to The Drive.
As stated in the report, the Blazer is currently the only gasoline vehicle still being manufactured at the GM Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico, which also produces the Equinox EV, Cadillac Optiq, Blazer EV, and Honda Prologue.
In 2024, sales of the midsize Chevy two-row dropped by nearly 20%, with a total of 52,576 units sold throughout the year. However, this decline was balanced by the sales of the Blazer EV, which reached 23,115 units during the same timeframe. In comparison, Cadillac sold 26,432 XT5s and 20,225 XT6s last year, with XT6 sales experiencing an increase of almost 6.0 percent in 2024.
With the removal of the Cadillac XT5 and Chevy Blazer from its offerings, GM would no longer have any gasoline-powered two-row midsize crossovers available in its U.S. showrooms; its only remaining midsize options would be the Blazer EV and Cadillac Optiq.
GM is not alone in reevaluating its midsize lineup. Stellantis has been without a midsize two-row model since the Jeep Cherokee was discontinued, and Ford has ceased production of the Edge and Lincoln Nautilus at its Oakville Assembly Complex in Canada, although the latter is now brought into the U.S. from China.
Cadillac's lineup is particularly affected by GM's recent portfolio changes. In addition to the rumored discontinuation of the XT5 and XT6, the smaller XT4 has also been removed from the lineup for 2025 to clear space for the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt.
