Audi's New Model Nomenclature is Logical Once More
Audi is once again altering its naming structure. The automaker had initially removed engine displacement badges in favor of more arbitrary numbers. Recently, it shifted to an alphanumeric system using odd numbers for combustion vehicles and even numbers for electric vehicles (EVs). Now, it is discarding that model in favor of a more traditional approach.
Here's how it will function: the letter and number will indicate the body style and size/model of the vehicle, much like it has traditionally been. “A” will denote a sedan and “Q” an SUV. For example, an A6 will represent a midsize sedan, while an A4 will refer to a smaller sedan. The distinction is clear. To differentiate between electric models, Audi will use specific badges. Electric vehicles will feature “e-tron” badges, gasoline cars will carry “TFSI,” and diesels will use the familiar “TDI” designation. This new system certainly streamlines the naming process and reinstates a recognizable Audi format. We hope this marks the end of constant changes and confusion.
According to Audi, the decision to switch came from feedback gathered from dealerships and customers. “This decision is based on extensive discussions and reflects the wishes of our customers as well as feedback from our global dealers,” stated Marco Schubert, a member of the board of management for sales and marketing at Audi. “Our nomenclature now offers all customers globally an intuitive understanding of our offerings. We choose model names that readily convey size and positioning at first glance.”
The first model to adopt this new naming system will be the Audi A6. Previously, the A6 was slated to be an electric vehicle named the A6 e-tron, while the gasoline version was expected to be called the A7. Now, both variants will be referred to as the A6, differentiated by their powertrain badges: A6 TFSI, A6 e-tron, and A6 TDI. This is a notable improvement. However, Audi will not retroactively apply this structure, so the existing A4 and A5 models will continue to have their distinct names, even though they are essentially electric and gasoline versions of the same car.
I commend Audi for acknowledging its mistake and taking corrective action. Corporations often hesitate to make sudden changes, but Audi acted on customer and dealer feedback and chose the right course of action.
