Rivian Service Has Been Following Incorrect Instructions for Years, Resulting in One Owner Getting Injured | Carscoops
A standard repair has rendered thousands of EVs unsafe, prompting a recall for owners related to a crash and a mistake from a service procedure conducted years ago.
Rivian is recalling 19,641 R1T and R1S models in the United States due to issues stemming from incorrect suspension repairs performed since 2022. There has been one reported crash and a minor injury associated with this problem.
If you own a Rivian R1T or R1S manufactured between 2022 and 2025, you should pay attention to this recall, particularly if your vehicle has undergone servicing. Notably, the serious suspension concern is not due to a factory defect, but rather the result of improper reassembly during specific repairs.
According to a recall notice from Rivian, certain 2022-2025 R1T and R1S models had their rear tow link joints serviced, requiring these joints to be disconnected and reconnected. From April 1, 2022, to March 10, 2025, service personnel utilized an outdated service procedure, leading to incorrect reassembly of the links.
Rivian stated that rear toe link joints not reassembled "to design intent" might encounter unintended forces. Over time, there is a risk that the joint could completely separate while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the likelihood of a crash.
This concern is not merely theoretical, as one incident has already been reported, resulting in minor injuries, which emphasizes the gravity of the defect.
Regarding the number of vehicles impacted, a total of 19,641 vehicles are included in the recall, although Rivian estimates that only about 1 percent might actually have the defect. Most of the affected vehicles are R1T trucks, totaling 12,610 units, with an additional 7,031 R1S SUVs involved.
Starting February 24, Rivian will begin notifying owners of the affected vehicles. Dealerships have been directed to inspect and, if needed, replace the rear toe link bolts using an updated service procedure that rectifies the original error.
This is not Rivian's only recall in recent weeks. In December, the company announced it was recalling nearly 35,000 electric delivery vans (EDVs) due to potential damage to the driver-side seat belt pretensioner from repeated misuse.
