Verge Motorcycles has launched a motorcycle featuring a solid-state battery.
It comes with capacities of 20.2 and 33.3 kWh, providing up to 370 miles of range.
The bike produces 137 hp and 737 lb-ft of torque, starting at a price of $29,900.
Solid-state batteries are anticipated to be a major advancement, and they are now making their way into consumer vehicles. Verge Motorcycles is among the first to offer these batteries, indicating that users can expect significantly quicker charging times and nearly double the range compared to traditional batteries.
The solid-state battery will be available in the Verge TS Pro in the upcoming months. While the company hasn’t shared extensive details, the battery, supplied by Donut Lab, will come in both 20.2 and 33.3 kWh options. The 20.2 kWh version allows for 217 miles (349 km) of range, while the 33.3 kWh version extends that to 370 miles (595 km).
When recharging, a 200 kW NACS charger can provide 186 miles (299 km) of range in as little as ten minutes. This impressive performance comes without affecting the motorcycle’s price due to the enhanced battery pack.
Additionally, Verge has claimed that the solid-state battery is designed to last for the entire lifespan of the motorcycle, unlike traditional batteries which typically endure “thousands of charging cycles.” The company also emphasized safety, noting that solid-state batteries do not catch fire, making them safer for both users and charging stations.
Solid-State Claims with Significant Figures
Donut Lab stated that they have developed the “world’s first solid-state battery fit for OEM vehicle production.” They reported that the battery's energy density is 400 Wh/kg and it is engineered to last up to 100,000 cycles, theoretically amounting to nearly 274 years of daily use.
The company also mentioned that the battery has undergone rigorous testing in extreme conditions, maintaining over 99% of its capacity at temperatures of -22° F (–30° C) and 212° F (100° C).
Returning to the motorcycle, the solid-state Verge TS Pro will have a starting price of $29,900 upon its release in the first quarter. It will be powered by an electric motor generating 137 hp (102 kW / 139 PS) and 737 lb-ft (998 Nm) of torque, allowing the bike to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (0-96 km/h) in just 3.5 seconds.
