A rod penetrating the engine block can signify the end for both the engine and its vehicle. However, this 2005 Ford F-250 Super Duty got a new lease on life after its Triton 5.4-liter V8 failed. Instead of being sent to the junkyard, it was acquired by LOJ Conversions, a company that focuses on engine swap components, and received a Godzilla 7.3-liter V8 transplant.
A video on the company’s YouTube channel, initially discovered by Engine Swap Depot, reveals that LOJ had bought the Godzilla engine for development reasons. It remained unused in the workshop until owner Stephen Dorrick decided to utilize it. He opted for a Triton-equipped Super Duty since the bolt pattern matched the Godzilla engine and chose the 2005 model because that year’s refresh replaced the front leaf springs with coil springs. He even contemplated transferring F-250 components into a Ford Excursion, but finding rust-free versions of that SUV in LOJ's New Jersey area proved to be challenging.
The conversion included custom engine mounts, a throttle body from a Coyote 5.0-liter V8, a Ford Performance Control Pack, a radiator from a Power Stroke 6.0-liter diesel V8 (with a custom shroud and two Spal fans), and a new exhaust system from Stainless Works. The four-wheel-drive truck retained its stock manual transfer case, Dana 60 front axle, and Sterling 10.5-inch rear axle. The original ZF S6-650 six-speed manual transmission was also kept but connected to the engine using a clutch and flywheel from Ford’s Triton 6.8-liter V10.
Ford launched the 7.3-liter Godzilla engine in the 2020 F-Series Super Duty, generating 430 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque in that setting. It's uncertain what specific version is in Dorrick’s truck, but it would significantly outperform the Triton engine, which produced about 255 hp and 350 lb-ft in stock form. Ford later released a 6.8-liter Godzilla and supercharged Megazilla crate engines yielding over 1,000 hp.
This 7.3 Godzilla-Swapped F250 is a Road & Tow Dream
This truck was designed for daily use, not drag racing, so the emphasis was on making the Godzilla engine functional rather than achieving high power levels. In the video, Dorrick remarked that the swap was so straightforward it seemed as though Ford had planned it. He has driven the Godzilla-equipped F-250 for a year, accumulating around 10,000 miles. Although he acknowledges that the truck's 12 mpg isn’t impressive, he highlights that it is an economical way to enhance an older truck's capabilities compared to choosing a diesel option.
