What Appears to Be a Standard R34 GT-R Isn’t, and It Will Set You Back More Than $600K | Carscoops

      In the competitive realm of Japanese tuning, few brands are as esteemed as Tommykaira. Renowned for its unique style and expertly executed modifications, the company has established its reputation by transforming Nissan Skylines into sharper, rarer, and faster vehicles.

      One of its most sought-after models, the Tommykaira R-Z based on the R34 GT-R, has recently become available for sale, presenting a rare opportunity to embrace the pinnacle of tuning philosophy from that era.

      This R-Z is not merely another modified Skyline; it is one of only a select few ever created, with sources indicating that only “a few dozen” remain. It began its life as a GT-R V-Spec before undergoing a complete visual and mechanical overhaul by Tommykaira.

      The exterior enhancements start at the front, featuring a reshaped fascia, revised air intakes, and new grilles that give the Skyline a more aggressive appearance. A chin spoiler adds a touch of sharpness without being overly flashy.

      Widened fenders and extended side skirts enhance the car's presence, while the rear is distinguished by a fixed, dual-pane wing mounted on aluminum supports. Although some Skyline enthusiasts might prefer the original design, the modifications made by Tommykaira are tasteful and not excessive.

      Under the hood, the excitement ramps up. Nissan’s renowned 2.6-liter twin-turbocharged RB26DETT engine has been upgraded to produce 530 hp, significantly exceeding the factory stated output of 276 hp and representing a notable increase from the usual real-world performance, which is closer to 320 hp.

      Tommykaira achieved this added power by increasing the engine displacement to 2.7 liters, incorporating a custom crankshaft, and installing larger turbochargers.

      Numerous other enhancements have also been made. This includes new Bilstein shocks and AP-Racing brakes with six-piston calipers. The sports coupe is also fitted with eye-catching 19-inch forged magnesium wheels finished in gold.

      The car is up for auction through Bingo, with the sale set for early next month. The auction listing states it has only covered 20,191 km (12,546 miles) since new, with the current owner adding only 2,000 km (approximately 1,200 miles) over the past 15 years. Its expected sale price ranges from 95 million yen ($603,000) to 105 million yen ($666,000).
