Rivian Owners Can Now Harness Solar Power, But There's an Important Limitation to Consider | Carscoops
A new solar tonneau cover offers up to 250 watts of solar capacity for pickup trucks, with optional energy storage available.
The cover is designed for the Rivian and can be utilized while the vehicle is in motion or parked. Developed by Worksport, the 'SOLIS' solar tonneau cover will be launched in mid-January and provides up to 250 watts of solar power. Notably, energy generated by the solar panels does not need to be used immediately.
The system features a compact storage unit that can charge in approximately four hours, allowing it to store the energy collected by the panels. This stored energy can power tools, lights, camping equipment, or small electronics, though it currently does not recharge the R1T's main battery.
In the future, Worksport aims to collaborate directly with manufacturers like Rivian to potentially allow its solar systems to directly charge the vehicle's main battery in subsequent versions.
Solar Tonneau Covers For All
The cover is constructed from aircraft-grade aluminum and, according to Worksport, boasts remarkable strength and durability without unnecessary weight. Additionally, the company offers these solar tonneau covers for a variety of pickup trucks.
Worksport claims compatibility with numerous models, including those dating back to 2002. Trucks from brands such as Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Nissan, Ram, and Toyota are included, featuring popular models like the Tundra, Frontier, and Sierra 1500.
The pricing for the SOLIS cover varies based on the truck bed size, ranging from $1,999 to $2,499. Although it may not be inexpensive, given the investments many truck owners make, it is unlikely to surprise them much.
For the smaller bed of the Rivian R1T, the price starts at $1,999. Buyers looking to include the inverter and battery will need an additional budget of $949.
