Miata Remains the Solution, Now Featuring a V6 and No Regrets | Carscoops
The Keiryo MX-5 aspires to achieve a power-to-weight ratio similar to that of the Ferrari F40, boasting 370 hp and remarkable lightness.
Keiryo MX-5 is designed to reach 370 hp with a wet weight of only 850 kg.
Its AJ30 V6 engine has connections to Ford, Jaguar, Porsche, and Cosworth.
Rocketeer asserts that it will achieve power-to-weight ratios comparable to the F40, Huracán, and 620R.
While the Mazda MX-5 may always be the go-to choice for some enthusiasts, many desire greater power. This is one reason why the UK-based company Rocketeer has found success. For years, it has manufactured V6 Miatas that draw inspiration from classic 1960s roadsters. Now, they’re introducing a completely new, low-production model named the Keiyo.
The name means "lightweight" in Japanese, which sets the stage perfectly. The custom restomod company aims for a maximum weight of just 850 kg (1,873 lbs). This commitment aligns perfectly with the spirit of the MX-5. Of course, there’s much more to this Mazda than merely lighter materials.
Rocketeer is also aiming for 370 horsepower (275 kW), utilizing a well-known V6 engine. This engine is a significantly revised version of Jaguar’s old 3.0-liter AJ30.
Despite its modest beginnings, the AJ30 possesses an impressive lineage. As noted by Top Gear, it has roots tracing back to the Ford Duratec V6, originally designed by Porsche, with Cosworth cylinder heads added later for enhancement.
In the Keiryo, this engine is combined with a fierce dedication to maintaining lightness and an analog driving experience. Rocketeer describes this car as its “ultimate interpretation” of a pure driver’s car: free from turbos, bulky electronics, and unnecessary complications. It features 375 hp and a curb weight lighter than that of a new Caterham Seven 420, with an emphasis on mechanical feedback over digital enhancements.
With that combination of low weight and high horsepower, the Keiyo will occupy a rarefied space, boasting a power-to-weight ratio on par with elite vehicles like the Ferrari F40, Lamborghini Huracán, and McLaren 620R. Quite impressive for a former friendly roadster.
Detailed pricing and specifications are not yet available, and Rocketeer advises interested buyers to contact them directly. However, if the Keiryo meets its ambitious targets, it could become the most remarkable MX-5 to ever grace UK roads.
