Smart's First Sedan is Surprisingly Larger Than You Imagine | Carscoops

The first images of the new Smart #6 sedan have emerged, with its most surprising aspect being its size, in addition to its powertrain.

Smart's #6 plug-in sedan utilizes the same platform and powertrain as the #5 SUV, featuring a 1.5-liter turbo engine that produces 161 hp alongside a 268 hp front motor. The electric-only range may exceed 157 miles with an upgraded battery pack.

Smart is expanding beyond SUVs. Traditionally recognized for its ultra-compact city vehicles and more recently electric crossovers, the brand is now entering new ground with its inaugural fastback sedan, named the #6. Unlike typical market offerings, it launches not solely as an electric vehicle but as a plug-in hybrid.

Revealed through submissions to China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the #6 exhibits several design elements akin to recent models in the Chinese market, such as the Xiaomi SU7.

The front features headlights that are seamlessly integrated into the bumper and connected by a full-width light bar, a design trend rapidly gaining popularity. It also boasts a sleek hood and a small lower grille in black, along with a panoramic glass roof present on the two trim levels depicted.

At the rear, the #6 adopts a fastback design, replacing a standard trunk lid with a sizable hatchback opening, complemented by a deployable rear spoiler.

As for its dimensions, the #6 is a substantial sedan, approximately comparable to the latest W214 Mercedes-Benz E-Class. For context, the E-Class measures 4,949 mm (195 inches) in length, 1,880 mm (74 inches) in width, and 1,468 mm (57.8 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 2,961 mm (116.6 inches).

The #6 is slightly shorter, measuring 4,906 mm (193 inches) in length, wider at 1,922 mm (75.6 inches — though it’s unclear if that measurement includes the mirrors), and taller at 1,508 mm (59.3 inches), with a wheelbase of 2,926 mm (115.1 inches).

Smart has confirmed that the #6 EHD will utilize the same plug-in hybrid powertrain as the recently introduced #5 EHD SUV. This includes a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 161 hp, paired with a front-mounted electric motor rated at 268 hp and 280 lb-ft (380 Nm) of peak torque.

While the battery specifications for the #6 haven't been officially disclosed, it's reasonable to expect they will align with the two options available for the #5: a 20 kWh pack and a larger 41.46 kWh unit. These provide all-electric ranges between 75 miles (120 km) and 157 miles (252 km) in the SUV, with total range estimates of 921 miles (1,483 km) and 1,003 miles (1,615 km), respectively. Given the #6’s more aerodynamic profile, there’s potential for slight improvements in both electric and total range.

Up to now, Smart has not released any interior images of the #6. If it adheres to the design theme of the #5, it may feature a widescreen digital instrument panel, a head-up display, and dual screens across the dashboard, including one for infotainment and another for the passenger.

Team Toyota has made it clear, from Chairman Akio Toyoda to the GR GT Project Manager, that they aim to win and demonstrate to the world that they can create a true driver’s car.

On Thursday, just outside Fuji, Japan, at Toyota’s Woven City during the unveiling of the Toyota Gazoo Racing GR GT, an aerodynamics engineer told The Drive, “We want you to anticipate the car’s evolution,” when asked about the consideration of active aerodynamics.

Speaking through a translator, the aerodynamics engineer mentioned that the team explored every option (including active aerodynamics) from the beginning. “That doesn’t mean anything is off the table,” he added.

The production-intent vehicle that was revealed does not feature active aerodynamics or even a rear wing. Instead, it has a compact ducktail decklid spoiler, making it resemble the 911 GT3 Touring more than the 911 GT3, despite it being aimed at the latter.

The individual responsible for ensuring the GR GT moves through the air efficiently hinted at the possibility of a more powerful variant of the GR GT being released later. However, the phrase "growth of the car" and frequent references to the Porsche 911 GT3 during the engineering discussions suggest that while today’s GR GT targets the Porsche 911 GT3, a future variant may seek to compete with the GT3 RS, possibly incorporating active aerodynamics.

Even if a variant doesn't include active aerodynamics, we can develop a solid idea of what a hotter, more RS-like GR GT variant might look like.

The GR GT3 race car provides the framework. The front fenders have vents for air extraction, similar to the GT3 RS. The hood includes deep air vents where the street car’s intake sits, also resembling the GT3 RS. Additionally, the large racing wing mounted on swan necks mirrors the GT3 RS. Engineers noted that the race car's wing is structural, bolted directly to the chassis, which was visible through the rear window of the prototype GR GT3.

The Toyota GR GT appears to be just the beginning of the automaker's ambitions for its new icon. Prepare your finances and adjust your 401k plans accordingly.

Toyota covered travel expenses, lodging, and provided raw fish, which I definitely did not consume, to bring you this firsthand account.
