The most significant updates and reviews in the automotive world, no nonsense.

Do not refer to it as a Toyota, as the latest flagship sports car from Toyota does not feature the automaker's badge. It’s also not a Lexus but rather a product of Toyota Gazoo Racing. However, there’s a catch: there are no GR dealerships, and that brand isn’t present in the U.S. market.

At the debut of the Toyota Gazoo Racing GR GT (its official name) just outside Fuji, Japan, at Toyota’s Woven City, The Drive posed the obvious question: How will consumers purchase a GR GT in the U.S., and where will they have it serviced? A Toyota representative responded, “The GR GT will be available for purchase at select Lexus dealerships.”

Yet, it’s not a Lexus, and Toyota is part of the name Toyota Gazoo Racing. It seems Americans will likely be perplexed, especially if they walk into a Toyota dealership and find a $225,000 sports car next to a Corolla.

The price tag of the GR GT will ensure its sale through Lexus dealerships, even without a Lexus badge. Buyers investing over six figures in a vehicle will anticipate a premium level of service—something that typically doesn't align with a showroom that features a Corolla. However, Ford has successfully achieved this with its GT supercar and is now navigating a similar path with a $325,000 Mustang.

Ironically, the GR GT will eventually share showroom space with the electric LFA, which utilizes the same chassis as the GR GT.

This may be the first instance of a non-Lexus being sold through Lexus dealers, but it certainly won’t be the last. Toyota is preparing to follow a similar approach with its flagship Century luxury models in the U.S.

As for which specific Lexus dealerships will be included and the criteria for their selection, that has yet to be determined. Hold off on contacting your local Lexus dealership for now.

Toyota covered travel, lodging, and provided raw fish, which I certainly did not consume, to facilitate this firsthand report.
