Gerry McGovern is reportedly no longer with Jaguar Land Rover after serving for many years.
Recent reports indicate that the design chief was let go by the company. McGovern held the position of Chief Creative Officer and has been with JLR for decades. His departure comes as Jaguar is gearing up for a much-anticipated relaunch.
According to reports, Jaguar Land Rover’s decision to terminate McGovern marks a significant shakeup. Some accounts even suggest he was "escorted out of the office," indicating possible tension.
Details remain unclear, but Autocar has reported that McGovern was dismissed on Monday. There is no information regarding the reasons for his termination, and the automaker has chosen not to comment on the matter.
Additionally, the publication pointed out that this change follows the retirement of CEO Adrian Mardell, who was succeeded by PB Balaji. Balaji previously served as Chief Financial Officer for Tata Motors, leading to speculation that the owner of Jaguar Land Rover is looking for increased oversight of the company.
We may find out more in the coming days, but this shakeup occurs at a challenging moment, as Jaguar is on the verge of relaunching. The company’s electric GT, previewed by the Type 00 concept, is anticipated to debut next year at an estimated price of $130,000.
The redesign initiatives have sparked controversy. Furthermore, McGovern was instrumental in overseeing the creative direction and management of the brands – Range Rover, Defender, Discovery, and Jaguar – playing a significant part in Jaguar’s transformation.
A Long History in the Automotive Industry
McGovern earned a degree in industrial design from Coventry University and later obtained a Master’s from the Royal College of Art in London. His career began at Chrysler, followed by roles at Peugeot and Rover.
He then joined Ford before returning to Land Rover in 2004. Since then, he has been recognized for reimagining the Defender and expanding the model lineup with new additions like the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Velar.
