A 45-acre property is on the market in northeastern Virginia, featuring some unique attributes, most notably a fully equipped drag racing facility. The site, called "Custom T's Motorsports Park," is available for $3.5 million, which is quite a reduction from its initial listing price last year.
Recent real estate photos reveal that Custom T’s facility includes a 1/8-mile drag strip, along with a neat staging area and ample parking. It seems suitable for hosting car shows and autocross events, in addition to drag races, if one desires.
Located in Colonial Beach, VA—between Richmond and Washington, DC—this property offers access to a considerable potential audience of racers and spectators. While it's a rural setting, there are significant population centers nearby.
Custom T’s remains operational, as shown by its active Facebook page and recent event coverage. The track predates its current owner, having originally served as a landing strip before reopening as “The Longfield Drag Strip” for car racing back in 1963. Larry Thompson has owned and managed the track since 2018. According to the history page, the name reflects Thompson's background:
“In 1987, Larry Thompson founded Custom T’s of DC, a T-shirt company. He grew his business by screen printing T-shirts, caps, sweatshirts, and tote bags for family reunions, school events, athletic departments, and of course, drag racing competitions.”
An image from Custom T’s Facebook page illustrates what the track looks like during events. There are photos featuring a variety of vehicles from specialized dragsters to street cars. A local tourism website notes, “Different types of vehicles race at this 1/8th mile asphalt drag; it’s not limited to cars and trucks. You can also spot motorcycles or ATVs racing down the track.”
Kudos to the ATV racers. I can't imagine what would convince me to try a serious drag race on a quad.
Unfortunately, like many tracks across the nation, Custom T’s has faced challenges with neighbors and efforts to restrict events at the venue. After a “contentious vote” earlier this year, the track managed to secure additional event permits, which seems to be a hassle and likely contributes to the sale.
Listed in March 2024 for $4 million, Custom T’s either did not attract a buyer, or negotiations fell through, and now it can be acquired for $500,000 less.
For the sake of motorsports, I hope a patient and innovative buyer steps in to sustain the venue. Just be prepared to engage with local authorities if you're seriously considering a purchase.
