We currently have the Bronco and Bronco Sport models. Soon, a new addition will join the lineup—a plug-in hybrid variant based on a different architecture, bringing the total to three unique vehicles. However, there’s a catch: this model will only be available in Europe for now.

According to a report from Automotive News, this new model will be described as a “chunky” compact SUV (similar to the Bronco Sport) but will not share the same platform (so don’t think of the Bronco Sport). It will actually utilize a platform even smaller than that of the Ford Kuga (Europe’s version of the Escape, which shares a platform with the Bronco Sport). As a result, it may end up being even smaller than the new mini-off-road Toyota Land Cruiser FJ, which company executives believe is too small for the American market.

Adam has already provided an analysis of this, so there’s no need for me to repeat his work. Here it is:

The Land Cruiser FJ has a length of 180.1 inches, which is 13.5 inches longer than a Jeep Renegade—a vehicle widely considered small. The new RAV4, while larger than its predecessor, is only one or two inches longer than the FJ, depending on the trim level. Surprisingly, the FJ is significantly taller as well, measuring 77.2 inches, more than 10 inches higher than a RAV4 without any roof additions.

At 180 inches, the compact FJ also surpasses the two-door Jeep Wrangler (approximately 171 inches) and the Ford Bronco (around 174 inches). Meanwhile, the Bronco Sport measures about 173 inches. Whatever Ford of Europe is planning, it is likely to be quite small.

As anticipated, there has been no progress regarding a full-size plug-in Bronco. Its platform counterpart, the Ranger, is available as a PHEV in Europe, while its main competitor, the Wrangler, has a version available in the U.S.
