This Classic BMW Coupe Transformed Its Heart with a Tesla Motor | Carscoops
A 1972 BMW 2002 has been transformed into an electric vehicle by Bavarian Econs Tech, featuring Tesla power and i3 batteries, and is currently listed on Bring a Trailer.
This conversion utilizes a 33 kWh battery from a BMW i3 paired with a motor from a Tesla Model S, which produces 178 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque, offering a driving range of 124 miles.
Electric vehicles often make daily driving feel seamless, being quiet and smooth, unlike the noise and compromises of combustion engines. For daily use, they can make traditional gasoline vehicles feel outdated.
Nonetheless, there's a reason car enthusiasts appreciate engines; they contribute character to a vehicle, especially in classic models such as the BMW 2002. So, would you be interested in driving a 1972 BMW that has been modified for electric power?
Currently available on Bring a Trailer, this Golf Yellow 1972 BMW 2002, now referred to as the 2002te, has been revitalized by Bavarian Econs Tech, a specialist company located in Munich. The conversion is comprehensive, with the original engine and drivetrain replaced by a 33 kWh battery pack from a BMW i3.
The energy from this battery powers an electric motor from a Tesla Model S, producing 178 hp and 125 lb-ft (170 Nm) of torque, controlled by a 400-volt electrical system.
Lightweight, Fast, and Silent
The seller claims this car can travel up to 124 miles (200 km) on a single charge and can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in a brisk 6.2 seconds, which is more than sufficient for most driving needs. Weighing in at just 2,400 lbs (1,088 kg), it seems like a lot of fun to maneuver around corners.
However, besides the absence of an engine and the accompanying sounds and vibrations, this car eliminates the transmission as well, meaning the next owner won't experience the excitement of shifting gears.
A representative from Bavarian Econs Tech mentioned that the BMW 2002 came into their shop with only 31,000 km (19,262 miles) and was free of rust. Notably, the exterior paint is original, as is much of the interior.
There are some updates, including newly installed bucket seats, refreshed carpets, and a modernized air conditioning system. Additionally, the car features a Bluetooth audio system with eight Helix speakers and a subwoofer for enhanced entertainment.
Completing the car's attractive appearance are 13-inch Alpina wheels fitted with Michelin XDX-B tires. The electric BMW is also equipped with adjustable KW Racing V3 Classic coilovers, and all essential bushings have been replaced with polyurethane ones from Powerflex.
If you're interested in a classic car reimagined as an electric vehicle, the auction is currently live on Bring a Trailer. Check it out and place your bid while it's still available.
