Hyundai Crater Concept Emerges as a Potential Competitor to the Bronco | Carscoops
The rugged SUV concept from Hyundai makes its first appearance at the LA Auto Show this week.
This four-door prototype showcases pixel lights and heavy-duty off-road tires.
It will be unveiled on November 20 during a YouTube livestream from the LA Auto Show.
Hyundai is preparing to introduce a new off-road concept that isn’t afraid to tackle rough terrains. Named the Crater, this tough-looking show car hints at Hyundai's next direction focused on adventure and is set to debut this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
The name should not be confused with the Hyundai Creta, a subcompact available in Asia, as it implies something significant, which is backed by the initial teaser images. Could it potentially rival models like the Ford Bronco or Toyota Land Cruiser? The answer remains uncertain, but it does seem plausible.
What is clear is that the Crater concept appears robust and purposeful, featuring short overhangs, bold fenders, and futuristic yet practical lighting elements. Hyundai indicates that this concept is designed to represent a more rugged, dirt-oriented identity for the brand, suggesting that the upcoming “XRT” styling packages may evolve into something more capable.
This would indeed be a positive development. While Hyundai's current SUV range consists of popular crossovers, it is missing a genuine off-road leader—a feature that car buyers increasingly seek across various brands.
The Crater concept seems to indicate what such a vehicle might look like, whether as a trail-ready electric SUV or simply signaling that XRT variants will enhance their off-road capabilities.
The teaser’s enclosed grille and smooth surfaces hint at possible electrification, although the manufacturer has yet to confirm any powertrain details. If this concept transitions into a production model, a combustion or hybrid engine seems most probable, placing Hyundai in closer competition with brands like Ford and Jeep.
It's noteworthy that Hyundai is reinforcing its off-road ambitions following the lack of traction for the Santa Cruz light truck as initially anticipated. However, the automaker clearly sees the importance of maintaining the spirit of exploration, evidenced by the positively received Ioniq 5 XRT and now this new concept.
If the full design of the Crater, revealed later this week, is reflective of its name, it should certainly create a buzz at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
