Typically, seeing “camper van” and “blowout” in the same phrase would cause concern or stress, but if arranged properly, it can lead to positive outcomes. This is the case today, as the national rental company Escape Camper Vans is closing down and selling off its rental fleet in an eBay inventory blowout, creating an appealing opportunity for those looking to join the hashtag-van-life (Who brought 2010 back?) at a reduced price.

“After nearly twenty years of assisting travelers in exploring the open road, we share this message with a heavy heart: we’ve made the tough choice to officially close our doors,” the company announced on its website.

“We’ve worked diligently to pursue our mission despite an increasingly difficult economic climate, reductions in international travel, inflation, and shifts in consumer behavior,” the statement read. “Ultimately, the time has come to close this unique and remarkable chapter. But we’re thrilled to present you with the good news: we have camper vans for sale!”

Indeed, there are numerous models currently listed on Bidadoo (essentially an eBay landing page). Additionally, they have several spare roof tents available as well. Feeling fortunate?

The company’s website indicates five models still up for rental, but a review of the FAQ and other sections suggests that more were previously available. Bidadoo’s interface does not allow filtering by the names Escape employed for various configurations, but you can at least arrange them by the underlying chassis.

If you’re anything like me, you might be at least somewhat hesitant about purchasing a used camper—especially one that has spent most (or all) of its time in rentals. After all, if the fastest car in the world is a rental, surely the most adept expedition vehicles are too?

Out of curiosity, I checked Escape’s terms of use to see what was allowed and what wasn’t, and while there are several warnings regarding where you can’t drive, I expected mentions of challenging trails like the Rubicon or Colorado’s Black Bear Pass; instead, the company found more issues with customers damaging their interiors at Burning Man. Well, uncertainty is a part of adventure, right?
