Abarth is marking the 65th anniversary of the remarkable world records established by the Abarth 1000 Monoposto. While it would have been ideal to see a limited-edition car launched for this celebration, the brand has instead collaborated with watchmaker Breil to produce a unique timepiece.
The chronograph is limited to just 465 units and is priced at €399 ($463), making it relatively affordable within the realm of automotive-themed watches, although that is a subjective notion. Considering it utilizes a quartz movement instead of an automatic one, it may be slightly expensive for its type.
The Record
On October 20, 1965, company founder Carlo Abarth took to the track in a specialized Abarth 1000 Monoposto Record, where he set world records for both the quarter-mile and 500-meter sprints. The car, based on a Formula 2 chassis from that time, was equipped with a 982 cc engine generating 105 hp at 8,800 rpm.
With a weight of only 500 kg (1,100 lbs), the vehicle exemplified minimalism and precision. To maximize his performance, Carlo Abarth famously lost around 30 kg (66 lbs) before attempting to set the record.
While driving at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, Abarth achieved quarter-mile and 500-meter times of 13.62 seconds and 15.38 seconds, respectively, in the G-class engine displacement category.
The car was then upgraded with a more powerful 2.0-liter engine producing 216 hp, and the next day, it recorded quarter-mile and 500-meter times of 11.55 seconds and 13.37 seconds in the E-class category.
Today, this record-setting vehicle is housed in the Heritage Hub museum in Turin, Italy. For Abarth enthusiasts, there is now another way to celebrate its legacy through the new watch, though its connection to the car is more emblematic than direct.
What Makes The Watch Special?
The Breil Abarth 1000 chronograph features a black stainless steel case paired with forged carbon fiber and traditional carbon fiber. The timepiece includes Start and Stop buttons positioned at the 2 and 4 o’clock marks, along with skeletonized IP-titanium hands coated for luminescence.
A sapphire crystal protects the front of the watch, and the back displays the serial number along with an engraving that reads “1965-2025, Abarth 1000, 60 anni di storia.” It boasts water resistance up to 10 ATM, or approximately 100 meters, and weighs only 50 grams.
