YouTuber Cody Detwiler, known as WhistlinDiesel, was arrested on Wednesday for allegations of tax evasion. And yes, it seems legitimate this time. An indictment from the Tennessee circuit court in Williamson County claims Detwiler “did unlawfully and willfully attempt in any manner to evade or defeat any tax due to the State of Tennessee in an amount of five hundred dollars ($500) or more, specifically sales tax owed on the purchase of a 2020 Ferrari F8 Tributo.”
The supercar in question is likely the $400,000 exotic vehicle that ignited while speeding through a cornfield in an August 2023 video. In February of the same year, Detwiler stated he acquired the Ferrari “just to destroy it,” sharing another video of a self-described durability test where he used it to “feed farm animals, go fishing, and upset sensitive individuals.” It’s notable that the F8 Tributo had Montana plates when it caught fire; many supercar owners register their cars in Montana since the state does not impose sales tax.
For those who may not be familiar, a recurring theme on his channel involves taking valuable vehicles and deliberately damaging them for views. The three videos featuring the Ferrari on WhistlinDiesel’s channel have amassed 44 million views and counting.
Detwiler’s mugshot became viral on Thursday, alongside rumors of a $2 million bond. He has since been released from jail and shared photos and a video of himself being led away in handcuffs, with the caption reading, “Won so big they thought I was cheating. (100% real not AI).”
Detwiler previously staged a fake arrest in collaboration with a Georgia sheriff’s office in 2022, intended for a video they hoped would “break the internet.” However, this situation appears to be real; a staff member from the booking department of the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to The Drive that Detwiler was “most definitely here” on Wednesday, and his name also appeared on the jail’s inmate list.
Local news outlet WKRN reports that he is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday, Nov. 19.
