By now, you should be aware that Ram primarily focuses on trucks. However, it also manufactures vans and is set to introduce an SUV to its lineup, as Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa revealed to Wall Street analysts on Thursday morning.

Automotive News was the first to report this, quoting Filosa who mentioned that the new SUV and the upcoming midsize pickup will provide Ram with a “more comprehensive product range.” The truck manufacturer plans to leverage its connections within Stellantis to launch this model in 2028. It is anticipated to have both a gas-only engine option and an extended-range EV powertrain, similar to the new Jeep Grand Wagoneer. While details remain uncertain, it appears that the Ram SUV will likely be a larger three-row model, rather than a counterpart to the Dodge Durango. The midsize truck will be produced in Toledo, Ohio, alongside the Jeep Gladiator, while the newly announced family vehicle will be assembled in Warren, Michigan.

If this is accurate, it’s reasonable to expect it to utilize Stellantis’ STLA Frame platform. This adaptable architecture was designed to support both traditional internal combustion and electrified powertrains. Though Ram might opt for a Hemi V8 engine for the range-extended EV, it will most likely feature a Pentastar V6 like in the new Grand Wagoneer and Ram 1500 REV pickup.

Regarding the electrified pickup, it was initially intended to be named the Ramcharger; however, the automaker changed its plans after eliminating the battery-only model. Remember that Ram used to produce a Ramcharger SUV that competed with the Bronco and K5 Blazer. It could be the right time to revive that name, even though it might upset some traditional Mopar enthusiasts.

This initiative is part of the parent company’s substantial $13 billion investment in U.S. manufacturing through 2029. Filosa has reportedly highlighted the significance of the domestic market to Ram and Stellantis overall, stating that the U.S. “is a key priority for our success because when we are strong in the U.S., we are stronger and better as a company everywhere.”

Offering a large SUV in the U.S. makes perfect sense given the country’s love for them. The Chevy Tahoe remains the best-seller in the full-size segment, with GM selling over 105,000 units last year alone, not including the 87,000 GMC Yukons sold. Ford is demonstrating with its new Expedition that there is a demand for alternatives to the Bowtie, making it logical for Ram to enter this market as well.
