Nissan Xterra Concept Rebirth Features a V8 and a Manual Transmission | Carscoops

Nissan Xterra makes a comeback with two new builds for the 2025 SEMA.

Both concept SUVs, designed for off-road enthusiasts, have received Nissan and Nismo's endorsement. They combine components from newer models with enhanced off-road features.

Update: One of the modifications, conceptualized by Nick Raymond Scherr, who is behind the New Age Nissan Xterra project for this year's SEMA Show, has made significant progress.

Nick mentioned that this model will be equipped with Nissan’s VK56 5.6-liter V8 engine, paired with a six-speed manual transmission, promising an engaging driving experience.

Earlier, he revealed initial interior and exterior images showcasing the project’s development. While based on the classic Xterra design, this build integrates various parts from the 2022-and-newer Nissan Frontier, merging recognizable design elements with modern mechanics and functionalities.

This customized SUV preserves the original Xterra’s essence but incorporates essential upgrades from the 2022-and-newer Nissan Frontier. These upgrades include a complete front-end swap featuring headlights, grille, bumper, and fenders, along with Frontier front doors, mirrors, and a redesigned interior dash that includes an updated infotainment system.

Additionally, there’s a vented hood made of carbon fiber, alongside roof-mounted LED lights pending final installation. The body will eventually be coated in a vibrant, eye-catching color to highlight the new features. Off-road enhancements, such as larger tires and a modified suspension, are also in the works.

While many automakers are busy reviving classic models like the Bronco and Land Cruiser to meet the rising demand for rugged off-road vehicles, Nissan has remained relatively quiet.

The brand has faced various challenges, including financial issues and stalled merger negotiations, while also promising a future product lineup overhaul. One notable absence from its recent history is the Xterra, which has not been produced since 2015.

The encouraging news is that Nissan's long-term product plan includes a boxy SUV slated for 2027 that could embody the Xterra's off-road spirit. Initially intended to be fully electric, plans have shifted, and it is now expected to feature a hybridized V6 engine.

In the meantime, enthusiasts can look forward to two SEMA concepts that envision a more traditional, gas-powered Xterra model for 2026.

We previously reported on the Nissan Project X build a few months ago. This passion project was conceived by Nick Raymond Scherr, a video creator and dedicated Nissan fan, who works at Avondale Nissan in Arizona.

When he isn’t assisting customers with acquiring new Z models at fair prices, he has dedicated his spare time to realizing his long-held dream: a contemporary version of the Xterra for 2026.

These Xterra concepts are not mere restorations; they are full mashups reflecting Nissan’s off-road heritage. The parts used come from the second-generation Xterra (2005–2015), the third-generation Pathfinder (2005–2012), and the current Frontier (2022–present).

The sketches depict a robust SUV equipped with Frontier-style headlights, grille, and taillights for a more contemporary look. While the main body design is based on the Xterra, the proportions of the sides take inspiration from the older Pathfinder.

In line with typical SEMA builds, these SUVs will feature roof racks, off-road bumpers, rock rails, and tire carriers. Both designs will showcase modernized interiors with the latest technology, with one featuring a standard two-row setup and the other accommodating three rows.

True to SEMA traditions, both builds will include roof racks, off-road bumpers, rock sliders, and swing-out tire carriers. The interiors will receive a contemporary makeover with current tech and comfort features.

One of the variations will offer a traditional two-row configuration, while the other will extend to provide three rows.
