The 1000 MBX is not only a sporty coupe but also a 2+2 crossover featuring a spacious interior and adjustable ride height.

Skoda's designers have reinterpreted the classic 1000 MBX coupe as a contemporary electric vehicle.

It includes a 2+2 seating arrangement, rear suicide doors, and enhanced cargo flexibility.

The concept envisions electric power along with height-adjustable air suspension.

Skoda continues its digital concept series that reimagines historic icons through a modern perspective. Following new takes on the Felicia Fun pickup, the Favorit hatchback, and the 110 R coupe, the automaker has now turned its attention back to the 1000 MBX coupe from the 1960s, redesigning it to resemble a Mazda RX-8, albeit with an electric powertrain.

The new concept was developed by Skoda designers Antti Mikael Savio for the exterior and David Stingl for the interior. The process took about three to four weeks, starting with initial sketches on paper scraps and concluding with a detailed 3D digital model.

      Inspiration Behind the Design

This project takes cues from the classic 1000 MBX, which debuted in 1966 as the two-door coupe variant of the 1000 MB sedan. Skoda manufactured just 2,517 units, making it a rare find today.

The modern version retains a similar body shape but incorporates a second pair of rear-hinged doors for easier access to the 2+2 seating, subtly echoing the now-discontinued Mazda RX-8.

Like previous concepts in the series, Skoda has shied away from leaning heavily on retro styles. Nonetheless, the design pays homage to the original through thoughtfully selected details that align with the brand’s Modern Solid design philosophy.

The LED front lighting design recalls the chrome grille of the classic model, while the headlights slightly lift from the hood in a familiar fashion. The C-pillar shape and tail contours also harken back to the original design. A central fin topped with a rearview camera replaces the conventional rear window, providing a futuristic touch.

Antti Savio, who led the exterior design, stated, “Our concept is sportier overall, yet still maintains a friendly appearance. Modern sports cars often look too aggressive, while those from the ’60s and ’70s exuded a certain elegance and charm – and that’s what I aimed to preserve.”

      Interior Features

The interior features a 2+2 layout, with a front bench seat made possible by the flat floor of the electric vehicle platform, and two individual tip-up seats in the rear. The latter can easily be stowed, creating an open space for transporting items like bicycles or sports equipment.

At the front, a transparent, oval-shaped dashboard replaces the traditional configuration, and there's no central console, inspired by classic car designs.

Interior designer David Stingl remarked, “This vehicle should inspire its occupants to explore without hesitation. It’s intended to be more than just a fun weekend coupe or a secondary family vehicle; it is designed for genuine everyday usability.”

      Electric Specifications

Skoda did not disclose specific details about the fully electric powertrain of the concept, but the designers envisioned it with adaptive air suspension that can adjust its ride height for a low, sporty profile or increased clearance for rough terrain.

While Skoda enthusiasts might hope for a production version of this compact coupe, the company has no such intentions. The “Icons Get a Makeover” concepts are intended as creative tributes, celebrating the brand’s legacy while granting designers the freedom to explore new ideas without the constraints of production limitations.
