The Strangest RAV4 in the World Returns Featuring a 70s Chevy Smile and a Backlog of Orders | Carscoops
Mitsuoka reintroduces its retro Buddy SUV, based on the RAV4, for 2026 with a limited run of 150 units, new colors, and a nostalgic design that is already generating interest.
After a two-year hiatus, Mitsuoka is bringing back the Buddy SUV, utilizing the previous RAV4 Hybrid that features a 2.5-liter engine and all-wheel drive (AWD). Production is set to commence in May 2026, with starting prices at ¥7,260,000 (approximately $47,600).
While the Toyota RAV4 was the best-selling vehicle globally in 2024, some drivers find its conventional styling less appealing. Evidently, some prefer a more assertive appearance.
Although Toyota has transitioned to a new-generation model, Mitsuoka is taking 150 units of the earlier RAV4 and transforming them into unique tributes to classic American SUVs.
The Mitsuoka Buddy was initially launched in 2020, and after selling 1,200 units, production was suspended in 2024 due to semiconductor shortages affecting the supply chain.
Now that Mitsuoka has secured a new stock of RAV4s, they have reopened reservations and promise enhanced features and finishes for this limited edition.
Changes Made
The Buddy, with its friendly name, maintains the RAV4's greenhouse, roof, and doors, but all other body panels have been reimagined. Its boxy front, featuring a chrome-heavy grille and vertically arranged headlights, evokes the nostalgic designs of 1970s Chevrolets.
This retro vibe carries through to the rear, which is adorned with a custom tailgate, a chrome bumper, and taillights inspired by Cadillac.
Customers can select from five color options, including the exclusive Globe One White Pearl II, limited to just 30 units, alongside two new shades: Iceman Gray and Beach Greige.
Internally, the layout of the RAV4 is recognizable, but there are new seat upholstery options for a fresh look. Standard amenities feature a panoramic sunroof and a digital rearview mirror.
All new Buddy models will be based on the Hybrid X trim of the RAV4, which is powered by the customary 2.5-liter self-charging hybrid engine paired with an eCVT transmission and the E-Four AWD system.
Availability and Pricing
Production is set to restart in May 2026, with final deliveries expected before year-end. Mitsuoka is currently accepting reservations in Japan, with demand anticipated to exceed supply rapidly. Prices start at ¥7,260,000 (around $47,600), which represents a significant increase from the base price of the RAV4 Hybrid X at ¥3,859,900 ($25,300).
If the price gives you pause, Mitsuoka’s statement about the Buddy conveys a sentimental touch:
“Regardless of generation or gender, we all create stories by intertwining the wonderful moments of joy and sorrow we’ve experienced, sometimes with our nostalgic selves, sometimes with our current selves, and sometimes with our future selves. The name ‘Buddy’ is filled with the hope that it will accompany each person’s journey and stand by their side.”
