GM's Upcoming Major Tech Initiative Might Disrupt Millions of iPhone and Android Users | Carscoops
CEO Mary Barra announced that future internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles will also forgo Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, opting instead for GM's proprietary software.
In an interview with The Verge, Barra confirmed the decision, which follows the previous removal of these features from the company’s electric models in favor of their native systems.
General Motors is emphasizing its own technology while stepping away from well-known phone mirroring platforms. After eliminating Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from its electric vehicle lineup, GM has now indicated it will extend this change to its gasoline-powered cars.
During a discussion on The Verge’s Decoder podcast, CEO Mary Barra mentioned that the forthcoming centralized computing platform, expected to debut around 2028, will eliminate smartphone projection altogether.
Essentially, users will no longer connect their Apple or Android devices to control the central screen, and instead, they will engage entirely with GM’s own infotainment system.
The automaker asserts that it aims to enhance connectivity for drivers, not complicate their experience. Executives believe that utilizing GM’s native software will offer a more cohesive, safe, and integrated user experience.
However, this shift also allows GM to retain user data and promote tech subscription services for additional revenue.
When GM initially announced the removal of Apple and Android capabilities from their EVs, many in the automotive community reacted with skepticism, and this transition for traditional gas vehicles is likely to face similar backlash. For numerous consumers, CarPlay and Android Auto are not optional features but vital components they expect in their new vehicles.
While the current and soon-to-be-released combustion models will still have smartphone mirroring capabilities for a while, the implementation of the new software architecture in future models will gradually phase out these features.
As reported previously, the first vehicle to incorporate the new system will be the 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ, signifying the start of GM’s fully integrated digital experience.
