Introducing the Initial Collector to Acquire BMW's $580,000 Skytop | Carscoops

This Skytop will be added to a garage that already houses a Ferrari SF90, Dallara Stradale, and Porsche 911 GT3 RS.

Limited-edition BMW Skytop was recently delivered to an Italian racing driver.

It features a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 engine sourced from the BMW M8 Competition.

BMW has confirmed that another limited-edition model is currently in the works.

When BMW revealed the Skytop concept in 2024, few anticipated the subsequent events. The company quickly announced a limited production, and before long, all 50 units planned had been reserved.

This was quite surprising, considering the car, built on the foundation of the standard M8 Competition, was believed to have a starting price of over €500,000 ($580,000). Customer deliveries have now begun.

The first unit was recently handed over to Italian racing driver Andrea Levy at BMW Welt in Germany, who shared a brief video of the delivery on social media.

Levy's vehicle closely resembles the original Skytop displayed at Villa d’Este in Italy and will complement his already extensive car collection, which includes multiple Ferraris, Lamborghinis, a Porsche 911 GT3 RS, and a Dallara Stradale, among others.

Although the Skytop incorporates familiar BMW elements, it boasts a fully custom exterior. A notable enhancement is the introduction of a targa-style open cockpit featuring two leather-clad removable roof panels.

Like the initial show car, Levy's Skytop is finished in a silver color and is fitted with impressive wheels characterized by a complex spoke design.

The interior is reminiscent of the 8-Series, but Levy's vehicle is upgraded with luxurious new brown/red leather, contributing to a more premium feel, although it's debatable whether it justifies the half-a-million-euro price tag.

It is somewhat disappointing that BMW made no modifications to the M8-derived engine. Thus, the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 still delivers the standard 617 hp, alongside the usual eight-speed Steptronic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive.

BMW claims it can accelerate to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3.3 seconds, which is impressive; however, we suspect most Skytops will primarily reside in exclusive collections with limited driving.

About a year after the Skytop, BMW introduced a shooting brake variant called Speedtop, which is also set for a limited production run of 70 units.
