General Motors is encouraging you to look away from the road, but not just yet. Beginning in 2028, owners of the Cadillac Escalade IQ will be the first to utilize a new “eyes-off” Super Cruise, which marks the company’s inaugural Level 3 semi-autonomous driving system. This will be exclusive to the electric Escalade, supported by a new and more powerful computing platform set to debut around the same time.

While the announcement provided limited details regarding the technology, it’s expected to operate under the same parameters as the current system, which means it will be restricted to pre-mapped roads approved by the Super Cruise team.

"GM has already mapped 600,000 miles of hands-free roads in North America, and customers have driven 700 million miles using Super Cruise without a single reported crash linked to the system,” the company stated. “Furthermore, the technology and validation frameworks from Cruise contribute over five million fully driverless miles of expertise."

These statistics are impressive, but there are some limitations. First off, Level 3 systems are not universally legal in the U.S. This situation could change suddenly under the current administration, but for now, systems that don’t require a driver to have their eyes on the road are only permissible in California and Nevada.

Similar to the Mercedes-Benz Level 3 system, this new Super Cruise will activate a set of turquoise exterior indicator lights when it enters “eyes-off” mode. Essentially, everyone will know when you're not focused on the road.

“In 2028, GM will introduce a new centralized computing platform, starting with the Cadillac Escalade IQ,” GM stated. “This will completely redefine how vehicles are designed, updated, and enhanced over time. Built to support both electric and gasoline vehicles, the update integrates every major system—from propulsion and steering to infotainment and safety—on a single, high-speed computing core.”

And for those who aren't excited about movies, GM notes that the new architecture will also be compatible with Google’s Gemini AI, providing you with the option to pass the time through conversation with a well-voiced autocorrect. Isn't the future incredible?
