There's a new off-roader making its debut—well, not in this area, but elsewhere—and it's one that has been anticipated for years. Meet the new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ, a compact and rugged crossover set to be released around mid-2026. However, if you're in the U.S., it appears that won’t be the case, according to Automotive News.

Toyota's latest model will be available in two trim styles, each with distinct appearances. Both resemble Land Cruisers, so there’s no confusion about what they are, though one has a more retro vibe than the other. The more rugged brown version features retro-style round headlights and a snorkel, while the modern variant has a C-clamp-like headlight design. The latter is less aggressive but just as visually appealing as the former.

Both versions will come equipped with Toyota’s 2.7-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine capable of producing 160 horsepower. This will be paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel drive system, although no additional performance details were disclosed. Toyota is expected to reveal all the specifics later this month at the Japan Mobility Show. One notable feature mentioned is the removable front and rear bumpers, designed to encourage owners to venture off-road without significant risk of body damage or expensive repairs. Additionally, if these bumpers incur damage, they will be easier and more affordable to replace.

The Land Cruiser FJ is built on the same platform used by the global Hilux pickup and Fortuner SUV. Consequently, it should handle well on trails, thanks to its short wheelbase of just 8.4 feet, making it more compact than its 250 counterpart. Its width of only 6 feet allows it to navigate trails with the agility of a UTV. However, Toyota has not disclosed its ground clearance measurements or off-road angles.

The new FJ will be manufactured in Thailand and primarily sold in Asian markets and the Middle East. Nonetheless, Automotive News highlights the possibility of it reaching South America, where similar Toyota and Nissan vehicles are already available. There are no intentions to introduce it in the U.S., as Chief Engineer Masaya Uchiyama believes it is simply too small.

“There are no plans for America or Europe,” Uchiyama told Automotive News. “The starting point for this is the global South.”

It's not significantly larger than a UTV, but it's definitely much cooler.
