Mitsubishi plans to introduce a second SUV in 2026, in addition to its already announced electric vehicle.

This second SUV will be a sturdier and more rugged version of the current Outlander. It will enhance the Outlander's Trail Edition by including off-road features and driving modes.

Mitsubishi is expanding its U.S. offerings, this time without an electric crossover. The company has revealed plans for a new model aimed at adding significant off-road capability to its lineup.

Building on the popularity of the Outlander Trail Edition, Mitsubishi will soon launch a more robust variant of its family SUV, designed to perform well in rough conditions without showing signs of distress.

      Trail-Ready Intentions

Set to arrive in 2026, the new model will boast off-road-specific styling, driving modes, and performance enhancements, according to Mitsubishi. It will also feature a unique interior with more durable materials.

This new variant will broaden the Outlander family and enhance Mitsubishi's presence in the U.S., as part of its broader Momentum 2030 strategy, which aims to introduce at least one new or refreshed model every year until the end of the decade.

Although Mitsubishi hasn’t shared any images yet, the description suggests more than mere cosmetic changes. Anticipate a more aggressive appearance, sturdier bumpers, skid plates, and potentially a suspension upgrade for improved ground clearance and better handling on rough terrain.

U.S. Outlanders typically come with front-wheel drive, but Mitsubishi states the new model will elevate the optional Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) all-wheel drive system, so expect standard all-wheel drive and updated software for tackling more challenging trails.

The slower 181 hp (184 PS) 2.5-liter inline-four engine is unlikely to change, but Mitsubishi may also offer the 2.4-liter PHEV engine from the Outlander Hybrid, which delivers 248 hp (251 PS) and reduces the 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) time by nearly 1.5 seconds compared to the non-electrified version.

      A Two-Pronged Expansion

This rugged Outlander will launch alongside the new all-electric model (a rebadged Nissan Leaf) already confirmed by Mitsubishi for summer 2026.

Together, these two vehicles will cater to adventure enthusiasts and eco-conscious commuters, while also providing sales opportunities for dealers who have seen their time decrease since the discontinuation of the Mirage in 2024.

Note: Mitsubishi has yet to unveil images of the new rugged Outlander, but it is expected to be even more suited for outdoor activities than the Outlander Trail Edition pictured in the gallery below.
