Audi is reviving its plans for a robust flagship SUV that boasts genuine off-road capabilities.
The upcoming vehicle will compete with the Mercedes G-Class and BMW's future 4x4 offering.
It could utilize the same platform and production line in the U.S. as the Scout Traveler.
Despite the Mercedes G-Class being in production since the 1970s, it has never encountered a genuine competitor from other German powerhouses like BMW or Audi, which is surprising given how closely these companies often watch each other's strategies.
However, this might change soon. Both brands are reportedly working on rugged SUVs, suggesting that the G-Class may finally face some real competition.
Reviving a Rugged Vision
Audi has toyed with the idea of a Quattro-branded SUV positioned above the Q7 and Q8 for several years. In 2023, former design chief Marc Lichte hinted at this project, believing that there was adequate demand in the market alongside competitors like the Land Rover Defender and the Mercedes G-Class.
Although Lichte has been succeeded by Massimo Frascella, the concept remains very much alive.

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner recently spoke with Autocar, reigniting speculation. He confirmed that the brand has not given up on the ambition for a true off-road 4x4, encouraging enthusiasts to "stay tuned."
While Audi continues to streamline its lineup as part of Volkswagen Group’s cost-reduction efforts, Döllner believes there is still a niche for a flagship model.
“There is no niche banner,” he stated. “In fact, it’s the opposite. Having a more focused core lineup works perfectly, alongside some niche models that enhance the brand and facilitate the transfer of new ideas from niche segments to core products. This synergy is part of our strategy.”
Hints and Shared Foundations
Earlier this year, Audi showcased the Q6 e-tron Offroad Concept, featuring increased height, portal axles, an updated body kit, and all-terrain tires. While this prototype could evolve into a production model, a genuine competitor to the G-Wagen would probably be an independent model rather than an off-road iteration of an existing SUV like the Q6 e-tron Sportback.

A logical base for this project could be derived from the Scout Traveler SUV and Tera pickup, potentially sharing their ladder-frame chassis, 4WD system with locking front and rear differentials, along with fully electric and range-extender powertrains. This approach could help Audi minimize costly research and development expenditures.
Considering current VW Group resources, an internal combustion variant seems unlikely, given that the only available ladder-frame platform is from the aging VW Amarok in South America.
Manufactured in America?
Audi's most rugged offering could be produced at the Scout facility in South Carolina, avoiding import tariffs. Döllner confirmed that the company is contemplating U.S. manufacturing for future models, although the final decision will hinge on a "stable tariff situation" and other "regulatory boundary conditions."
He also suggested that while it would make sense for the brand to utilize an existing VW Group facility in the U.S., a “dedicated Audi factory” could also be feasible, depending on alignment with the U.S. government.
Design Possibilities
Shortly after the news broke, independent digital artist Theophilus Chin unveiled speculative renderings of an Audi Q-Wagon, modeled on the proportions of the Scout Traveler. The design incorporates Audi's styling elements into a full-size SUV framework, combining sharp lines with smoother surfaces.
