The Midget X concept is the smallest electric truck we've encountered in quite some time.
Daihatsu has teased the Midget X concept, reviving the essence of the original model. This compact light commercial vehicle combines a three-seat cabin with a versatile cargo setup. It features an electric powertrain and is set to debut at the Japan Mobility Show.
Daihatsu takes part in Toyota’s larger exhibit at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, showcasing a series of concept cars that reflect the visions of both brands for the future. Among these is the Midget X, a fully electric concept designed to usher one of Daihatsu’s classic models into a modern era.
The Midget is a small but impressive workhorse, first introduced in 1957 as a tiny three-wheeler for shopkeepers and delivery personnel, effortlessly navigating Japan’s narrow streets like a motorcycle.
This model returned in 1996 as the Midget II, combining nostalgic design with a determined spirit. Although production concluded in 2001, Daihatsu seems reluctant to let the story come to an end.
A Condensed Classic Revived
The Midget X concept appeared in a brief teaser prior to its official unveiling in Tokyo later this month. The model has now been reimagined as a small light commercial vehicle powered by electricity.
Its exterior design pays homage to the original Midget lineage, featuring circular LED headlights and a helicopter-style windshield. It also sports partially exposed wheels with built-in lights and a battery charge indicator on its side.
The cabin adopts a central driving position, featuring an unconventional steering wheel flanked by two passenger seats. The presented concept includes a backpack-style storage area and an extended bed at the rear, though additional variants may follow. Another notable aspect is the rotating handle design for the rear-hinged doors.
Daihatsu has not disclosed technical specifications yet, merely stating that “due to its small size, it can adapt to various lifestyles,” and that the company “aims to ensure happiness for everyone.”
Continuing the Legacy
The Midget X symbolizes the next chapter in Daihatsu’s narrative, extending the legacy of some of its most notable models. These include the original Midget three-wheeler, the fourth-generation Hijet light commercial vehicle, the first-generation Charade hatchback, the sporty Mira TR-XX, the Copen roadster, the second-generation Tanto kei car, and the Nibako mobility service that converts light commercial vehicles into mobile shops.
Currently, the Midget X remains a concept. However, it would not be surprising if it eventually evolves into a production model, potentially for both the Japanese and international markets. More information will be shared when the Japan Mobility Show commences, and updates will be provided as new details emerge.
