New Mercedes Coupe Teaser Appears to Be a Tribute to Both History and Innovation | Carscoops
A new enigmatic Mercedes-Benz concept may signify the beginning of a fresh design era, combining elements of nostalgia with a futuristic touch.
Mercedes is working on a two-door concept that hints at its future design direction. Gorden Wagener mentions it takes cues from the Vision Maybach 6 concepts. The exact debut date has not been revealed, but it could be announced at any moment.
Mercedes is close to revealing a new concept car that could revive the essence of the long-gone S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet. The unnamed vehicle has already featured in official teasers, showcasing an impressive illuminated grille and a traditional two-door coupe silhouette, signaling that the brand still excels in embodying luxury.
Gorden Wagener, the brand’s design chief, provided a few hints regarding the upcoming reveal on Instagram, referring to the secret model as “the shape of things to come” and describing the newly revealed grille from Munich as “the spark for a creative impulse.”
One teaser image shows the car from a front three-quarter view, mostly cloaked in darkness. Nevertheless, the details are revealing: slender headlights with star-shaped LED designs, a pronounced front splitter, and prominent, black-finished alloy wheels.
The completely enclosed illuminated grille strongly suggests an electric powertrain beneath the elegantly designed bonnet.
Another teaser focuses on the vehicle’s pronounced rear wheel arches, confirming its two-door coupe configuration. The door handles are positioned unusually close to the side gills, suggesting the presence of rear-hinged doors and frameless windows.
In the cabin, the company has provided a brief glimpse, evoking a blue light ambiance and featuring materials that appear to be sourced from a custom atelier. The design pays homage to the Art Deco period, combining intricate details with a contemporary layout.
Based on Wagener’s recent comments about the Audi Concept C, the dashboard is likely to include large digital screens integrated into the overall interior design.
Earlier posts by Wagener on Instagram referenced the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Coupé and Cabriolet concepts as inspirations for this forthcoming model. Those concept cars, showcased at Pebble Beach in 2016 and 2017, remain some of the brand's most striking recent design efforts, despite not going into production.
Speculations about the comeback of a flagship coupe in Mercedes' lineup began earlier this year when the company trademarked two-door S-Class variants in Maybach and AMG configurations.
However, these models were based on the current generation of the S-Class sedan, which is anticipated to receive an upgrade next year. The next generation, expected toward the end of the decade, should feature both traditional combustion engines and battery-electric options.
It remains uncertain whether this new concept is merely a design study or a real glimpse of what lies ahead. Yet, judging by the teasers, Mercedes is still committed to exploring the concept of the grand coupe.
