PROS ›› Stylish design, dynamic chassis, enjoyable to drive

CONS ›› High price, no power enhancement, awkward dashboard design

Over four years ago, Toyota introduced the second-generation GR86, building on the success of the original model that was previously sold as the Scion FR-S. Now, it’s utilizing some of that same appeal for its newest special edition, the Yuzu Edition, which amplifies everything fans appreciate about the GR86.

This coupe caters to enthusiasts who prioritize balance rather than sheer power. Lightweight, rear-wheel drive, and engaging without being excessively expensive, it stands among the last of the naturally aspirated new sports coupes available.

      QUICK FACTS

      *Manufacturer

The Yuzu Edition is presented as a low-production model for 2026, featuring a striking yellow color and several subtle yet significant performance enhancements. However, this exclusivity comes at a price of $36,365.

Beneath its vibrant exterior, Toyota has discreetly incorporated hardware that significantly alters the on-road experience of the GR86, revealing the true essence of this vehicle.

Recently, we tested the GR86 at Sonoma Raceway in California. Driving this model or its counterpart, the Subaru BRZ, in everyday situations is different from testing its limits on the track. Here’s what we discovered about Toyota’s latest iteration of the GR86.

      Bold And Distinctive Styling

The Yuzu Edition's purpose is evident. Named after the Japanese citrus fruit and borrowing a paint color from the FR-S, its bright yellow hue stands out even in low-light conditions and is unique to this version. Black accents on the mirror caps, rear spoiler, and 18-inch forged alloy wheels enhance its appearance without overshadowing the vibrant color.

Beyond the exclusive exterior finish, Toyota has added distinguishing features for this trim. Black accents adorn the side skirts and front bumper. Subtle Yuzu Edition badging on the fenders and interior highlights that this is not merely a cosmetic package, but an authentic limited-run GR86. Toyota plans to deliver fewer than 900 of these cars to the USA.

The coupe’s overall aesthetics remain unchanged, showcasing a clean, low-profile, and compact design. Sleek LED headlights, a wide grille, and minimal overhangs contribute to a timeless sports car stance that stands out among more intricately styled vehicles on the market today.

      Inside The Cabin

The GR86 Yuzu Edition doesn't limit its yellow theme to the exterior. Inside, buyers will find yellow contrast stitching, distinct door sill plates, and a numbered badge denoting its position in the production line. Standard features include an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

However, it's rather underwhelming and can feel sluggish in its response. The graphics also leave something to be desired. The gauge cluster is a 7-inch digital unit that offers various menus and moderate customization. Some displays, like the power curve visualization, could be perceived as gimmicky.

The dashboard and associated features might be the only significant downside of this vehicle. The overall design and execution feel somewhat clunky. The passenger-side dashboard does not integrate well with the cabin, the infotainment bezel appears unnecessarily large, and while we appreciate the presence of physical buttons, knobs, and switches, we'd prefer them to feel a bit more premium in such a special vehicle.

Improving the dashboard design to match the setup seen in an MX-5 would be a step forward. While it's not the most sophisticated dashboard or infotainment system on the market, its design comes off as much more cohesive and refined. The Hyundai Elantra N takes this direction even further, though it differs as a four-door, four-seater.

Nonetheless, the Yuzu Edition includes standard heated sports seats, which are exceptional. They are upholstered in black Ultrasuede with yellow perforations, providing a high level of comfort, adjustability, and lateral support.

This car offers excellent ergonomics. Visibility is superb, and the seat, steering wheel, and gear shift are well-matched. The pedal layout is clearly designed for enthusiasts.

Behind the front seats, there are storage areas that resemble back seats. While small children or pets might fit there, even my 70-pound dog would struggle for comfort.

To Toyota’s credit, the rear seats feature high-quality fabric upholstery with faux leather accents and useful child-seat anchors for the small kids who would really fit.

Owners can also fold down the rear seats for additional trunk access. However, trunk space only measures around six cubic feet, which is minimal, and practicality is hampered by a small opening.
