Buick's Latest Regal GS Believes It's A GNX | Carscoops
Buick has introduced an Obsidian Black Racing Package for Regal purchasers in China.
This package features a black exterior, wheels, and grille, complemented by a red leather interior.
Engine options include a turbocharged 1.5-liter or a 2.0-liter engine, both paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission.
Although Buick has exited the sedan market in North America, focusing entirely on SUVs, the classic four-door model continues to thrive in China.
The Buick Regal was removed from US dealerships in 2020, and its Opel and Holden variants are also no longer available, but it remains successful in China. Buyers can now select a new appearance package that draws inspiration from one of Buick’s iconic performance vehicles.
Nostalgia in Black
Dubbed the Obsidian Black Racing Package, this option combines dark black exterior paint, a black grille that makes the red GS badge stand out, black alloy wheels, and a rear spoiler, all in understated black. The design likely took cues from the 1980s Buick Regal-based Grand National and GNX.
Moving to the interior, one might expect a similar dark theme, but Buick’s designers chose to brighten things up by pairing the black exterior with rich red leather upholstery. This shade is more of a wine red than a bright red, adding some flair to an otherwise unexciting cabin.
The door panels showcase a honeycomb-patterned leather finish with French double stitching, and black leather continues across the dashboard. Ambient lighting in a wing shape is also present along the carpets.
The ‘Super Enjoyable Edition’
There are no changes to the engine lineup, so if you were anticipating a GNX-style engine upgrade, you'll be disappointed. The base engine, known as the “25T Super Enjoyable Edition” (according to the translation), is a 1.5-liter GM Ecotec inline-four producing just 166 hp (169 PS) and 184 lb-ft (250 Nm).
That may not sound very enjoyable, so we recommend opting for the available 28T, which is a 2.0-liter inline-four capable of producing 233 hp (237 PS) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm), and it, like the smaller engine, is mated to a nine-speed automatic. It may not compare to GNX-level performance, but the Black Package is primarily intended for visual appeal.
Buick states that the package is priced at ¥7,899 (approximately $1,110), with a promotional discount of ¥3,000 (around $421) currently offered. The pricing for the Regal starts at 106,900 yuan (approximately $15,000) and can exceed 200,000 yuan ($28,000) for higher trims.
