Tesla is recalling 260 Model Y crossovers from the 2026 model year due to an issue with reverse lights that may not function properly. This problem is related to wiring, as connectors may not have been securely attached.
Despite much of the government being inactive due to a shutdown, safety recalls continue, with this latest one involving the 2026 Tesla Model Y focusing on a wiring concern.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the wiring issue can prevent the reverse lights from turning on, thus violating federal motor vehicle safety standards.
This recall affects all 260 vehicles suspected to possess the flaw, which is attributed to a "loss of continuity in the rear lamp circuit due to the connector or terminal pin not being properly seated."
Tesla became aware of the problem on July 13, when a member of the Gigafactory Berlin team noted that the reverse lights on a Model Y were not illuminating. After conducting an investigation over several months, the company opted to initiate a recall.
As of last month, there have been 94 warranty claims and two field reports regarding this issue, but no accidents or injuries have been reported.
To resolve the problem, owners will need to bring their vehicles to a service center where technicians will inspect the reverse lamp assembly and reverse fascia harness. Any faulty components will be repaired or replaced.
Notices to owners are expected to be sent out on November 30. Meanwhile, suppliers have already improved the lamp housing and harness hardware, and Tesla has put in place additional checks to enhance the detection of reverse lamp failures.
