BMW's largest SUV, the X7, marks a significant new chapter with cutting-edge technology and a bold redesign.
The X7 is set to receive substantial updates, drawing design inspiration from the iX3’s Neue Klasse aesthetic. Panoramic Vision technology will introduce a large digital display that spans from pillar to pillar, while both gasoline and diesel engines will be retained alongside the debut of the fully electric iX7.
This major upgrade for BMW's largest crossover, codenamed G67, emphasizes a heavy redesign that adheres to the Neue Klasse design principles, and will also include the introduction of an all-electric variant for the first time.
Recent spy shots have captured the new X7 in testing, providing insight into what Bavaria’s upcoming luxury SUV will feature. Here’s what we’ve gathered so far.
Neue Klasse Curves
The current G07-generation X7 was launched in 2018 as a 2019 model and received a facelift in 2022.
Notably, the X7 will maintain its distinctive split-headlamp layout, with daytime running lights positioned high along the hood and the main beams redesigned into more squared units lower down. The revised kidney grille remains assertive but now incorporates lighting elements instead of chrome, while the lower air intake adopts a more rectangular form.
The Neue Klasse design influence is most prominent in the side profile, where the front and rear fenders, along with smooth, flush surfaces, echo the recently unveiled iX3.
The old-fashioned door handles will be replaced with discrete ‘winglets’ that rise from the beltline, resembling the styling of the Mustang Mach-E. Additionally, the rear quarter glass will be slightly larger and will feature the classic ‘Hofmeister kink’ more prominently than in other recent BMW models.
At the rear, the X7 will keep the split tailgate while the taillights will be slimmer and will use LED technology. M-performance versions will showcase quad tailpipes, and the all-electric iX7 will have a distinct lower valance to signify its electric powertrain.
Panoramic Vision
Within the cabin, the new X7 will feature BMW's Panoramic iDrive infotainment system, showcased by a pillar-to-pillar display at the base of the windshield offering customizable sections for essential driver information and passenger entertainment.
Additionally, there will be a 3D Head-Up Display and a sizeable central touchscreen for key infotainment functions, but some traditionalists might miss the physical iDrive rotary controller that will be omitted.
Interior features are expected to take cues from the new iX3, featuring cleaner surfaces, less clutter, more glass inlays, ambient lighting, and high-quality materials.
Enhancements in driver assistance capabilities will include hands-free operation for highway driving and a City Assist function that can detect traffic lights, stopping and resuming vehicle movement automatically.
Platform and Powertrains
The X7 will continue to utilize a significantly updated version of BMW’s CLAR (Cluster Architecture). Anticipate adaptive air suspension with adaptive dampers, with potential options for rear-axle steering and active roll control.
In addition to gasoline and diesel options, the iX7 will be introduced for the first time. Following the iX3's lead, a dual-motor variant is expected to deliver 463 hp (345 kW).
For even more power, an impressive 800-horsepower M70 variant will be part of the lineup, alongside an even stronger Alpina version. Reports indicate that this system will employ an 800-volt architecture with a 110 kWh cylindrical-cell battery.
The B58 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology is expected to continue, as well as the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 originating from the S68. The 40d xDrive inline-six diesel will also be available in markets where diesel engines still thrive.
Rivals and Reveal
Key competitors will include the Mercedes-Benz GLS, the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, and Audi's forthcoming flagship Q9. Other challengers will encompass the Genesis GV90, Lexus LX, Range Rover, Cadillac Escalade IQ, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator.
An official unveiling is planned for late 2026 to early 2027, with production expected to begin soon after. Both the X7 and iX7 will be manufactured at BMW’s Spartanburg facility in South Carolina.
